I felt like a seagull at the dump this afternoon. Guy pulled up and tossed 2 chainsaws, about 8-10 air nailers of different types along with belt sanders, routers & saws. I left with this 460 Mag Stihl, a small DeWalt laminate router and a Porter Cable orbital sander. Is this a decent saw when running properly? My only comparison is my trusty 044.
Nope it is a piece of junk. I will PM you my address and give you $50 for your troubles. Oh and by the way YOU SUCK, you lucky dog.
Depending on its condition, I will limit the “¥ou $uck” rating pending the pulling of the muffler to check for scoring/straight gassed.... unless you already got it started...and have bucked a cord...then it will be full on “¥ou $uck!”
Mmm...yup, one large order of "you suck" inbound! Can't imagine why someone would throw that out like that, should be worthy of a rebuild all day long...unless LodgedTree got hold of it with his dozer...then maybe not...
Good saw for sure. The AM has a few decent parts for this series. Avoid AM cylinders. The handle looks bent.. some AM handles are ok for average use but will bend with hard/pro use. I’d go through everything and assume the tank leaks. If the case and crank are good, build that sucker up. It’d have more power than your 044 but probably not noticeable until you’re pulling a longer bar.
The 046 is a good saw and worth rebuilding. The saw is 76.5 cm with a 52mm piston. I have a couple of MS 460's which are pretty much the same and both have after market parts in them. They run good and have not had any problems with them. Have fun with your new saw.
I'll admit that when I go to the dump, the first thing I do is go through the metal bin. Find out where the forest service dumps, and you will thank me. Fraud, waste, and abuse central. That was an excellent find. That sucker is definitely worth breaking down. Good job!
I was so jealous, I went dumpster diving. Got me a 365. Chain is brand new. Bar is good, doesn't even need dressed. Pulled the muff.....good to go from that side. I believe someone inherited it. The dump nazi told me the kid that brought it in said no compression. We'll I haven't tested yet, but I did pull the decompression out. Now it has compression. It may not be a 460, but I have a 365 already that I love.
You guys get ALL the good deals!! I'll say this much......after meeting fuelrod at the NE GTG last week and seeing what a great guy he is, he's deserving of a find like that! I hope it works out where it is a runner with little work. If not, he can always donate it to me..
I have not fooled with it at all, that saw will be a wintertime project. I don't know how I posted it as a 460, it's a 046. I don't feature myself as a collector but now I have an 044,045 & this 046. I kinda feel guilty not picking up the old Husky that he put in that pile, it was similar in (physical) size but it looked a bit more "boxy" like a much older saw. I did "eye up" a few kit's at Bailey's including an 82.5cc big bore
