At first we were going to do Mt.Moosilauke to add to our 4000 footer list, but with the heat we decided to do a shady water hike instead. DaveGunter We did the pemi east side trail which runs along the pemigewasset river, then the pine island trail on the way back. The water was low, with multiple water crossings, and I really don't know how anyone could cross it at higher water. We did fine, didn't take too many pics, but here's what we did get..... A view from the bank It doesn't look it, but this had some deep spots and was running fast. This is a safer spot to cross upstream. Matt navigating....... Another, same spot Dawn crossing...... Making our way to the bank Dawn and Matt on near the end of the hike Matt & myself.....
Wow, that's hot! Half day tomorrow and last day of school! we'll see 87°, maybe a swimming hole tomorrow!
Looks like a great way to spend Father's Day! A little surprised at the ruggedness of the water crossing, a lot a debris. That trail is in the notch?...South of Layfayette campground?
Off of 112- same entrance as Lincoln woods trail, but quiet side of the river. Back in 2011, hurricane Irene devastated the trail systems. Most of the Pone island trail is back, but it's rough going. The crossings are where there is an island on the river, which is just shy of a mile long. It's the western side of the pemi wilderness, no bridges, constant changes in the river. Clear trail with yellow blazes to the river and on the other side, but we needed to find suitable places to cross, up or downstream 50 yards or so. Amazing how high this river can get. Banks 20ft + in spots. Parts of trail closed due to bank undermining.
Mountains and lakes are sounding really great right now. Some of that 32 degree temperatures you had a week ago sound good to Well Seasoned
Yesterday was the only hot day, and cloud cover kept temps bearable today. Storms been rolling through dropping the temps.
