Yeah its coming... I’ve got a whole lot of healthy ones yet, but I have seen it in my woods already. Twenty miles south of here they’re all dead. It’s the 2nd most populous tree in my woods behind maple.
On my recent trip, the worst area was from Buffalo to Syracuse for seeing all the dead ash trees but especially between Buffalo and Rochester. It really makes one sad to see such damage.
There are areas still around me here in the far northern part of "The Peoplez Republik of Illinoiz" that there are huge swaths of dead ash trees. I've asked on a couple; but was turned down on both...............liability reasons.
Don't like that. Was discussing this with a co-worker today. Still not sure if I should have my live ash timbered out or not. It would/will be a disaster here as I have primarily ash and maple. Friggin bugs.
You said it!!! I’ve got 5 at my parents to take down and the whole front of my hedgerow next to the house is dead probably 30trees or more!
That's hard to even read. I guess it's one of those things things I have yet to come to terms with, but will have no choice. I know there is no way I can drop/cut/split all the ash I have, but I also don't want to see it wasted.
We've had EAB here for quite a while already, pretty much decimated most of the Ash trees...but, you still see a young one alive sometimes, even a new shoot coming up from the stump of a dead and cut tree occasionally. I hear the scientists have figured out how to make a EAB resistant tree Also, supposedly the bug doesn't like, or can't do its thing in young trees...maybe there's hope yet!
We plan to have a few log truck loads cut before the bug gets here. One philosophy is to leave them in hopes one is resistant to the borer, but that looks to me like a pipe dream at this point. Mine are at the 13 to 15” size, so they are adding value every year I leave them growing, but the clock is ticking.
It is really sad but the bug is not very far from you. They will find you too. They certainly thinned out our woods.
GTG in the making..... you’ve no doubt heard/read the lore of Hurricane walt ....... It’s like a Tempest of whirling chainsaw chains..... And it equals
Of this I have no doubt, it remains a matter of when, not if. The are most likely here already, just not seeing all the devastation yet. I indeed have heard/read such lore. We shall let the future unfold as it will, one never knows what tomorrow shall bring.
