I have two long and skinny garden beds. 90% of my veggies can be picked from outside of the garden. I will put down a few 2x8 planks between my lettuce, spinach and green onions in the spring to stay out of the mud.

Put the rest of my ground cherries in the ground next to the ones that I put in two weeks ago. The ones held back in the greenhouse out of the cold are twice the size and the leaves are not all curved to the ground like the ones I put in early. They actually look like they are shivering compared to the ones that have been warm. We'll see where they are in two weeks.

    Agreed.

Hay still has the seed heads on it. They will find their way into the ground and germinate.

*UPDATE*... After coming back from Well Seasons FHC GTG, I figured the tomato plants would be done for!:( Well, I'll let the pics do the talking ... They haven't been touched and were completely left alone. Chrissy did the weeding this morning. There are some "WHOPPER" tomatoes in there. :D If there is such a thing as luck, I got it "This time".... o_O DSCN3065.JPG DSCN3066.JPG DSCN3067.JPG DSCN3068.JPG DSCN3069.JPG

Dave, you will come to hate yourself if you use hay. Straw is much better. Hay is full of seeds and it will be years before you rid the ground of them. Grass clipping are OK, but just those from freshly cut lawns that haven't gone to seed. Don't mulch tomatoes until the ground has really warmed up. Cool ground will slow the growth of tomatoes. There is a red ground cover just for mulching tomatoes. I have never used it, but it is said to increase the yield.
Just saw your last picture. Fantastic right there! You can't complain about anything there!

    Yeah, don't use hay.
I got a free trailer load of horse manure once that was still green. Let it sit over the Winter in a pile but ended up with all manner of weeds I had never seen before. Will never do that like that again.

Hot weather usually gets tomatoes and peppers moving. Especially if they've had a chance to set some roots.
