Yeah that splitter at TSC was $795 6-8 weeks back...I bought my 23T Champion at Rural King for $695 I think it was. Menards has 'em in that range on BF often times too...

Menards (I think it was) had the DH 35 ton on black Friday for $799. I'd imagine a 20-25 ton model was only $599-699.

:coffee: Agreed. Buy a splitter that can split vertically. They are a back saver.

There was only one model available for the BF sale as I recall. They had a DHT 25T the year before at about the same price...mt neighbor got one of those.
I've never seen a new full size hydraulic splitter for less than $699...although there was a Champion at Sams Club a few years back that someone (here?) found on clearance real cheap....$299 maybe...but I think that person was the only one that was actually able to find one in stock at their local store...and it was a 16 T kinda mid sized machine...horizontal only and it was real short, would probably have had to sit down to use it (it was gas powered, not electric)

Lowes has the DHT 25-ton for $999 as its regular price. I've seen it on sale for $849.

Thanks all. I'm planning on "going vertical". I'm not familiar with Menards and would like to buy the unit assembled, from a local shop if possible...just a matter of finding one. Anyway, I'll be keeping my eyes out, and NOT overspending on this one.

I would likely stay away from something that had a Tecumseh on it. Or at least budget a replacement knock off engine into the offering - might be good to do that anyway regardless of the engine if you don't know its history. But especially Tecumsehs, they've been out of business for some time. You might get lucky to still find certain parts for them but the pickings might be getting pretty slim by now.

glorth2 just my 2 cents here, as some here have said wait till you see one on sale. TSC has had some at $699 and depending on how big your cutting and splitting, 20 to 25 ton is plenty of power. As nsmaple has said, I would stay away from anything with a Tecumseh motor. I have one with a briggs and one with a Honda, (I built the one with the Honda) but the old Craftsman 20 ton I have with the Briggs is like the Energizer bunny, it just runs and runs! Good oil changes are key. I would keep my eye's on the big box stores, Lowes, Home depot, TSC, Menards "if you have one" and just keep shopping, one will turn up very reasonable.

I think one might be hard pressed to find any splitter with a tecumseh engine on it.

That's likely true but you never know what will turn up that someone has had kicking around for a while. What's it been - maybe 10 years since they stopped? Maybe even longer - time flies. I did have a snowblower once with one on it, it worked great. But sooner or later they will all need parts.

"Splits through all softwoods and several types of hardwood." :sherlock:

My first one did. You might have actually liked it! :) It was an old unit that originated at JC Penny. (yes youngins...JCP used to sell tools and stuff like Sears). Anyways, it was horizontal only, but the beam only sat about 15" off the ground, so a milk crate or short log to sit on was paramount. Rolled many a round up a short 2x10 onto it. The engine never failed to start, but it always had the dreaded Tecumseh Surge and was abnormally loud for a 5hp engine. Spit shined it eventually and sent it down the road for $450.

I believe 2008 was the last manufacture for small motors.

New yes, repowered anything goes. Never been a big fan of Tecumseh eng. They had a habit of internally self destructing most spectacularly in the 4 strokes I have had over the years. Briggs have been good to me but have no experience with the latest items - newest one I have (8hp) on my splitter is 18 years old. Likely this year will see ethanol problems on that unit.

This is my $300 special from a co-worker who was moving. Looks a bit rough but runs very hard!!! Second motor on it though, he bought it new. :) Daughter has more fun with it than I do... DSCN2050.JPG DSCN2053.JPG DSCN2037.JPG

I also have a Troy-bilt roto tiller that originally came with a Tecumseh engine (in 1977 or 78). That gave up the ghost a long time ago though. We replaced it with a Kohler.

That's so funny you said that, one of my buddies in the Coast Guard bought his boy a mini-bike several years ago and it had a 3-1/2 hp on it, "I think" and within a weeks time the motor was banging so bad it finally locked up. He never did get a replacement Tecumseh from them, They didn't honor the warranty, they claimed "abuse". He refitted it with a Predator I believe.

It turns out that a local buddy is willing to go in on this with me. I'm thinking max bid of $700 or so. Here's a CountyLine at TSC right now. Thoughts on this vs the Huskee? CL has a Kohler engine and Huskee B&S.

Would your Buddy be willing to 'rent' it from you? I had a bad experience in the past owning half of something.

The County line is going to be similar to the Huskee. Looks to have a better engine. Unsure what the GPM is on the Huskee.

I'm a horizontal engine fan vs. vertical, just makes it easier to work on thats all. TSC "will" stand behind the country line products if anything goes wrong. It has my vote! Not to mention 25 tons is plenty for "most" of us burners. I would buy it out right though... Even if on time, sharing can be a real pain and cause bad blood sometimes.
