So I planted a little bit of everything here, peas corn bell pepper mixed colors and some squash. The heat of my garage had likely helped boost the seed germination and growth so That’s nice. Weather has been great, its gonna cool down a bit for a couple days and get a little rain and sun breaks then this weekend opens up with 70’s and sunday will be about mid 80’s. Shoot is this really May? Glad I’ve got these in order to plant later. Might even try to find some temporary pots or 2 gallon pots for some and let em be. Good choice to start things in these trays wildwest!
I'll add my two cents in...I don't have much experience with a variety of vegetables but I know about growing corn. I'm doing quite a bit of sweet corn this year. And trying pumpkins too. But the folks who said to use compost and manure are definitely right on. Cow manure or sheep or pig are the absolute best. They do wonders for soil. Improve organic matter and give NPK. As for working soil, do it once temperatures are above freezing steadily and the soil is DRY. Should be able to grab a handful of dirt and squeeze it without making a mud ball. Then you can plow/disk/cultivate/roto-till etc. Planting usually occurs when soil temps are in the 60F range and there isn't a chance of overnight frost anymore. Also, leaves from the yard make excellent addition to be tilled into soil for growing.
Here's how I prep the garden. I'm also hoping to pick up some more land to expand a bit too. Sell direct market farm goodies like sweet corn, popcorn, hunter's field corn bait, pumpkins, ghourds, sorghum/broom corn decor. After plowing I run the old antique cultivator. Then this can really get the seed bed prepped. A drag or cultipacker are in my "want" list as they could do even a better job of seed bed prep. But the disk is also a great way to kill weeds without herbicides. Organic style. Old school.
Popcorn! We are always on the hunt for tasty varieties to pop at home. If it's fancy, five bucks a pound.
Any advice on "leggy" roots? I've been growing in southern facing windows, moved to the deck. Has some wind, brought them back inside during frost. I'm currently repotting then down to the leaves

Today's plamting: 12 Hungarian Wax Peppers 12 tomatoes. 6 San Marzano , 3 Rutgers, 1 each Brandywine, Better Girl and Sunsugar Another 4 rows of Silver queen corn Another row of beans A row of Romaine lettuce. Haven't grown it before. To go yet. Sweet potatoes. Fed-Ex said Weds. by the end of the day. Didn't think it was going to happen since they were in MO Weds. morning. Todays update said by the end of the day Weds. Haven't seen them yet. The row is already mounded up and ready to go. 4 rows of a different Sweet Corn in 3 weeks. I have a 12' x 15' space left in the middle of the garden. Cucumbers probably. Any variety suggestions? They will mainly be used for making Bread & Butter pickles. Along with some fresh eating. I would like to row plant and plant a variety that doesn't spread out so much. Cucumbers have not done well for me the last 2 years. The rest of the space. Who knows?
Yeah I've read that too but which ones ? Are they like mushrooms you have to know which ones to avoid ?
The squash is starting to flower in my seeding trays. High of 58* today, low of 38* tonight, should I plant them?
Thank you Chvymn99 & billb3 , I'm going to switch some plans around and plant them tomorrow instead. WU 10 day says min 60*s days and min 40*s, so I'm going for it and cross my fingers. Avg first frost is Sept 10, so I'll have 3 months. bucket hoarder --us too. My husbands work goes through 2.5-3 gal buckets of fasteners like crazy so we have a lot here. I had planned to put the zucchinis in these, but now wondering if the stems might break when they fall over the edges? Other choices are are the buckets from WWW's work (I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage).
