I Found this huge Cherry blown over during the winter. It wasn't good enough for the sawmill
but should provide plenty of BTU's for the stove when dry. Need to finish splitting and get 'er stacked

Isn't cherry great? Not too heavy, dries pretty quick, burns steady without a heap of ash, and smells like a meal when processing. Nice work!

Looks like you got plenty of splits from that downed cherry.

Same here, some years 50% of the stacks. I love it for all the reasons BigPapi mentioned.

I burned 2 cords of cherry in the first 12 weeks this heating season. Love it! but it makes more ash than any wood I have burned in the last five years.

That pile of cherry almost looks good though to eat...seriously I can't be the only one that thought that after seeing the pics .

Nice. But perhaps many won't agree with me here. Cherry burns great but it does not last long. We like it for daytime burning and shoulder season burning but definitely not for nights in winter months.

I also don't get the smells that people seem to always talk about. Yes, there is some scent to it but not like what I read.

Okay, so now I'm the goat, but I don't mind. :zip:

That's funny you say that. I cut a couple of blow overs last year and they had the smell when cut, split, stacked, and burned.

I cut a blow over a few weeks ago and it smelled "sour" the best I can describe. It's split and I still grab a random piece when I walk by the pile and sniff it...still no smell. And it's definitely cherry.

Probably because your wood is dry when you burn it. I have noticed a lot of the different kinds of smells in wood seems to dissipate when good and dry. Even species like Russian olive and Elm.

I had a good cherry log some years back. Ants had destroyed much of the tree which was around 20" DBH, so I decided to firewood it. I was stopped cold when splitting by the beauty of the wood. I don't have any pics (pre smartphone days) but it was gorgeous and figured with little 'waves' in it. I must've spent a good five minutes admiring it while the splitter hummed away. They were and still are the most pretty pieces of wood I have tossed into the burner.

Couldn't agree more! I burn't about 2+ cord myself this year and it was 4+ years old, I couldn't get 4 hours from a whole round, that's about what I get with maple.

Beautiful indeed! There is just something about cherry that I love. I'd actually say it may be my favorite overall firewood. The color of the dark blackish bark against that reddish pale heart wood. Awesome. It seems to split better than any other wood I've dealt with and it smells so good! Like another poster said, I have found myself just looking at a piece of it after splitting. We really are weirdos eh? lol At least we're weird together. If I had neighbors they'd think I'm nuts.

Cherry is great and like everyone’s personal experience with it, Cherry just burns well smells good. However I agree on the longest burn not being much more than a handful of hours. But even here cherry is great for that steady comfy heat ....

I also agree, cherry is not the best for when a long burn is needed. I use it mostly for the evening burns or mix it in with something better to fill the box. But as I have said before I had a few winters when that was mostly all I had and we made it along just fine.
