Pin or red oak ?

    Pin Oak, worst smelling and poorest lumber quality of the red oak family. Still good firewood but with all that sapwood needs to be out of the weather more than other oaks or it will rot quicker if you keep it several years!!! Least my experiences :))

    So, FWIW, there are at least 90 species of oak in the US that can be roughly divided into "red oaks" and "white oaks." Each has their namesake, i.e. Q. rubra and Q. alba respectively, but each group has scores of species. Pin oak, Q. palustrus is in the red oak group. So it could be a red oak and a pin oak, all at the same time, just to make life miserable.
