I was doing some organization and thought I could get rid of my Poulan pole saw and get a pole saw attachment for my Kombi. I did a web search and darn near chocked when I saw the $200 price tag. If anyone has that attachment opinion please. Convince me the price is worth it. On the plus side all I saw was rave reviews.
Wow they have gone up. I think I paid 120? for mine but it was five years ago. The non powered Fiskers limb cutter has been on garage wall since I got it and while I haven't gotten rid of it, I have not used it either.
At $120 I would have been all over it. The Poulan sat in the box for 3 years or more. Opened the box this spring and it didn't run. Played with the carb adjustments and go it running. Very poor balance and cut like the chain had no teeth. Balance on a Kombi pole saw?
They work well. I have one. Only downside is the small oil tank. It doesn't last long. Like 3 tanks of oil to one tank of gas in the trimmer. It's easy to run it low and overheat a bar, so pay attention to the oil level very closely. Comes with a 12 inch bar which pairs perfectly with a stihl 170, 180, or a 192/3. Since I have the saws mentioned, I basically have a pile of bars and chains that fit it. Honestly tho, if the poolan is reliable and works, stick with it. If you wanna burn two hundy, I'll give you my PayPal info If you wanna burn shipping money, I'll send you mine to try out. It's rarely used .
I think it worth it-I have mine 3 years and haven't had any problems. I bought the extension as well. I think a dedicated Stihl pole saw is 6-700 dollars-I probably use mine a dozen times a year-enough so I wanted a quality unit, not enough to spend the money for a stand alone saw. Good point on the oiler-not like my saws where I never run out of oil before gas- you need to check that oiler every 10-15 minutes of solid use.
I have only used the Poulan to trim an Apple tree since I got it running and was not satisfied. I have several Maples that need some trimming. I believe I will live with it and use it until it poops. Hopefully sooner than latter. The 2 hundred bucks is not really in the budget right now. Thanks all for the input.
My groundskeeping crew at work run several Stihl Kombi units with a bunch of attachments, and we have a pole saw. I have used it, it's heavy but well balanced. Great for when you need one a few times a year, too often to rent and not enough to buy a dedicated unit. It's paid for itself. Edit - I know it won't help you, but my local Stihl dealer owns a few Kombi units outright that he buys one or more of nearly every attachment. He uses them for demonstrations, and will rent any of them out with an attachment of your choice, it's usually $25 for four hours or $40 for a day. Worth looking for a place like that if you only need something once or twice a year.
I use one on the farm. It works well but I find it short. The above statment about oil tank size is correct. But for the homeowner only doing a few limbs that probably wont matter. We've switched to Stihl's telescoping pro saw, the model number of which escapes me at the moment.
