I was running some errands and luckily I had the pickup. Saw a homeowner cleaning up around where a red oak had been taken down the day before. Sitting on his lawn was a trunk that was about 10' long and EXACTLY 36" in diameter. I asked him about it and he said the tree guy would be back soon to get it, they had run out of time & energy the day before. (but he didn't seem too happy about it.)

Asked him if he wanted it gone now. Yes he would love it. At this point I realized that I only had my 33cc Homelite Ranger with a 16" bar. This is how I measured the diameter:

As I cut the trunk I used an iron bar to roll it. When I finished going all the way around it was still attached. Used the bar to snap it and found a 4" core that the saw did not reach. 16+16+4=36" diameter.

That trunk filled the truck and the back was sagging all the way to the stops.

Nice score. That trunk should split nicely.

    Hoard on!

Those must have been some heavy rounds to heave into the truck!

I'm sorry but clean red oak like that preempts all other errands.

I'll face the wrath of SWMBO later. It's warm outside so she doesn't think about firewood. Next winter, when she keeps the house at 75° and the boiler isn't running is when she'll be concerned about if we have enough wood for the winter.

Cut to 20" & quartered on the spot. I wouldn't even try to lift 12 cubic feet of red oak round.

Way to go KaptJaq but I was sure you'd say you just threw those little rounds into the truck without splitting.

Maybe 40 years ago. From what I remember, fresh red oak weighs about 30 pounds a cubic foot. 36" diameter by 20" long is about 12 cubic feet. I am not going to even try to lift 360 pounds of red oak.

Older and I hope a little wiser (even if my wife disagrees on the wiser part.) If you got the tools, use them. Trying to show off just ends up in the E.R.

Nicer score! Good job not breaking anything internally getting it loaded, too. A man has to know his limitations, and I think a three foot by (almost) two foot red oak round is a perfectly respectable limitation. :)

    Very nice!

Now, about those errands you ended up not doing....I hope one of them wasn't going somewhere to pick up your wife!
