I was bucking some trunks that a yard service dropped in the yard. Half way through one of the cuts I noticed the dreaded "blue chips" in the saw dust pile. I hadn't felt anything nor noticed any difference in the saw. The chips were white again so I finished the cut... What I found: There was the indented outline of a large nail fully in the line of my cut, but, all that was there was the outline and some rust. The entire nail had rusted away. I didn't have to stop and field sharpen or change the chain. KaptJaq
Holy smokes. Dodged that one whew ! Can you retake the picture showing the middle of the tree I’m wondering what age the tree was approximately when rhe nail was put in.
Lucky day. When the guys were splitting at the gtg here last weekend we found some lag bolts in a split! No saw hit them so that was lucky time.
There were obviously several nails in that tree a long time ago. The head of the nail to the left is about 1/3 of the way from the center to the outer edge. You can also see, by the rings, how the tree deformed as it grew around the nail. My guess is that it was along the fence line when this area was all farms. KaptJaq
It’s funny how we can manage to find a tiny nail in all that tree! But it seems to work like clockwork...all to the detriment of our chains.
You should have shut the saw down, rushed out and purchased a half dozen lottery tickets with that luck!
Whew, looks like you dodged a fair bit of extra work there. Always better to find those things after NOT cutting into them!
Good job on waiting for that tree to finally rust the nail before you processed it! ......But just how did you know?
