Ok, I'm holding my breath because I planted my tomato plants today. :zip: I have chanced this before and it's payed off and I've also gotten burned! :picard: I'm hoping for good weather from here out and for the next week weather looks good. I just pray we don't get a frost between now and Mothers day, That's usually the norm for planting around here.
So, here are some pics of my "Brandywine" plants started from seed and they make such wonderful sauce. I've tilled in 4 @ 30 gal barrels of Horse $#!T, some wood stove ash, the remnants of the compost pile, some dead fish carcasses so the ground should have a good amount of nutrients for them. fingers crossed I didn't shoot myself in the foot!

I got my NJ Redneck sprinkler system going for water, it's always worked! ;)
So, I almost can wait for some good NJ Tomatoes! DSCN2990.JPG DSCN2991.JPG DSCN2992.JPG DSCN2989.JPG

With as miserable as this winter/spring has been, I hope you haven't jumped the gun.

Hoping for the best for your garden.

Cool hose holder!!! I had a to use a couple inventive ideas running around my fish hatcher (in my house, poor WWW, the aquariums were EVERYWHERE). I like your watering technique, whatever works!

I hope it goes well for you. We have a good week ahead of us, but with snow falling this past Thursday, I really think we could get one more cold spell.

We'll see in a couple weeks if I pulled it off! I trust the good farmers almanac and looked at the long range weather report. Don't forget, I'm right on the coast and the ocean water temperature dictates or nightly air temp mostly. Usually if it's 45º were in the clear for no frost. "I hope"...

Great idea on the house holder! Won't be transplanting outside here until June 1st! Keep blankets/ towels handy in case you need to cover em!

Trash bags over the cages if they call for frost! It's just enough to get them through the night.

We use the sheppards hooks for the bird feeders all winter, then when the bugs and such come out and they have plenty of food, we either use the shepherds hooks for plants or my fancy hose sprinkler.
Once I see black flies and bugs, the birds are on their own. I worked with a guy here at the base who is/was the "president and grand pooba" of the NJ chapter odf the Audubon society and he told me years back, "do not" get the birds dependent on you feeding them, cut them off as soon as you see bugs! This guy goes all over the world looking at birds. He just was in South America last month studying some kind of unseen humming bird. Those you can feed all summer.

Good luck with the ‘maters WeldrDave. I’m jealous you can try this early. Just like Well Seasoned we can’t get them out until June. Ground is just too cold. I’ve jumped the gun a couple times and always end up with stunted plants. By the time they recover the season is done.

Yeah, I know it's much later for you folks up in the Northern country. "Usually" we wait till Mothers day weekend but our plants got to big for the seeding pots and with good weather ahead I'm praying.
The south side of the house gets full sun all day and the ground was warm so I'm taking a shot, "Yes" a risk. :picard::whistle::eek: I did this about 4 years ago when our winter wasn't bad and we had a nice batch or plants and about 40 qt's of sauce for the winter after canning.

Yup, forgot all about that large weather influencer you have at your disposal. :handshake:

The large trash bags are all you need, like you said!

I'm about 60 miles north of you and inland. Couldn't even think of planting yet but I'm thinking you should be fine.

If at all possible I'd switch to a drip irrigation system. It's better to not get the leaves wet all the time.

I find if you put them out too early, as long as they don't freeze and die, usually the worst that happens if the soil is too cold they just slow down or just sit there and do nothing.
Which is probably preferable to stressing out in pots that are too small.
I used to start tomatoes way too early and found you really don't gain anything. Usually what you were 'ahead' you lose to adjusting to change.

I'm just moving mine from 3 ounce cups to 12 or 15 ounce cups this weekend. Hopefully the ground is warm enough when they have outgrown the bigger cups. I've had to go to even bigger cups in the past and hope not to do that.

We have rather cold well water and I've coiled out 300+ feet of hose in the sun to warm up to water the tomatoes with, just pouring the water on the ground, no sprayer. When the water starts coming out cold I'd stop and wait for the sun to heat it up again. Anything to help warm up the soil. LOL
