Good to know. Thanks! I have a question- why would a sharpening require taking down the depth gauges? Ultimately I know the teeth will get more bite, but not sure how it relates to a sharpening and why it cut well, went dull, got sharpened, wouldn’t cut, re-sharpened, cut great. Not being a wise guy, I really just don’t know.
The cutter gets shorter as you file - look at cutter from the side-you see a downward angle. Less cutter to hit wood when rakers stay tall.
That’s what I was going to say. Beat me by an hour! Sometimes being at work gets in the way of leisure time! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Part of the problem is the nomenclature just used above. Those lumps ahead of the cutting tooth are depth limiting items ( amount of bite the tooth is able to take) they really are not rakers as the do not clean any thing out. The depth gauges limit the attack angle of the tooth to the material ( i ain't the best with descriptions but that's the jist of it) They should be in the area of .020-.030 below the cutting edge too high in relation to the tooth edge you get dust no matter how hard you lean on it. Too low and things get to grabby and can stall you saw in the cut, or just buck around so bad you think you were at the rodeo. One other thing that can lead to dust instead of chips is not enough material removed from tooth to clean up the rolled/ worn edge. Course this is a double edged sword when your behind the counter vs customer, leading to the comment they "ground half of the tooth away blah blah blah". Hey, it's high test steel- dirt, rocks, concrete, silica/dirt in the groves of the bark won't hurt it. The metal version of the highly valuable black walnut tree.
Was at my dealer this weekend. Guy came in complaining about his new saw, clutch won't disengage. Saw is packed with dirt and the dealer asked what he's cutting. Oh we are putting a cable in for a underground dog fence and cutting the trench with it. I about pizzed myself from the look on the dealers face.
Thats just funny right there. Sad thing is that you could probably tell that to alot of people and they wouldnt know any better.
I don't think they'd let me take the 441 on my carry on? Appreciate the offer, but my aunt and uncle are stopping by on their way back to Texas this weekend.
There is a company that builds a chainsaw attachment for cutting trenches. TerraTrencher Australia Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think you will see that one again a few times. At least it's better than straight gassing the poor thing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
