I was doing a little cleanup in the truck cap. It came with a lockable compartment mounted to the ceiling of the cap. I bought the truck used and don’t have a key for it so I started to remove the storage box for more space in the truck cap. Even though it’s not the season or temp for hornets I still about crapped my pants when the box dropped away.
Spray it with some clear varnish and sell it on eBay for $65 I got two hanging in my shed and everybody who see's them wants them,,,,
Amazing where those nasty hornets will build a nest. Be thankful you didnt drop that storage box in july.
I have one hanging by our chicken coop in a tree yet. What little research I have done, they use them only one year. Queen dies. They need bark or cardboard nearby to make the nest as they actually chew it to softness to create the layered "paper" effect.
I watched a bunch of bald faced hornets chewing the outer weathered grey surface off of a grape arbor pole last Summer. Day after day they were at it all day. They had 30 poles to pick from they stripped this one and only this one. I'm guessing low level of PT, but it's at least 20 years old and pretty solid in the ground. Those hornets with the white faces are pretty aggressive.
The hornet's mission is to mess things up where ever it goes. They do not pollinate things. They do not make honey. They are not bees. They are damm hornets. You cannot battle the hornet. He is never alone. He is always accompanied by other, even more violent and aggressive hornets, all of which are accompanied by even more of the #@($&%. When you see one, do you know what you do? You stand still. You chill the heck out and hope the hornet doesn't put you on it's list of things it wants to $%@# up today. You stand right the heck there and wait for the hornet to finish its business and move on with its rampage. Either that or you kill them all. Your choice. Personally I prefer to kill 'em.
Yellow Jackets are really Wasp. Also if the queen dies where do the next years wasp and hornets come from? Of course if you read a couple different web sites about wasp and hornets you will learn the queen does not die. All the workers die but the queen finds a place and hibernates. "The life cycle of the yellow jacket nest begins in winter, when fertilized yellow jacket queens go into hibernation. Queens hibernate in covered natural locations such as tree stumps and hollow logs, under loose bark, although they may also choose manmade structures for shelter." Al
