step dad ended up with cancer....supposedly from being around the nuclear warheads when he was in the navy, spent his entire time on aircraft carrier with nukes on board. special deal in the VA for just such a thing, medical paid plus a monthly paycheck while going thru the chemo and all that. he applied after he was diagnosed last spring. so far he hasnt even gotten his first hearing on it so we have had to foot the bill for 3-4 trips 200 miles to the cancer center every week plus all the copay's on prescriptions since diagnoses....add into that my parents went from him working a $25 hr job to no income for the first 6-8 months. 1st of this year he officially retired so they started getting social security. its not much but anything is a bunch after spending 6 months living on the generosity of others. Thank goodness he had a decent job with great health insurance when this happened because if he didnt and we had to depend on the VA benefits he would have been dead before they got around to even looking at his application.

imagine the saw shop that would fit in there!

we had a big building similar to that years ago, arsonist burnt it down and the owners couldnt afford to rebuild it. it was an indoor flea market. place was always packed and some of the vendors had been in there for years. loved that place, especially the tool guy.

Just the property tax on that building should be enough to make you faint.

The VA has all kinds of stuff like that. Troops in Nam exposed to agent orange have similar benefits.

as we have found out tho....saying they have benefits and actually being able to access them are two different things. i had heard the horror stories of the VA for years but until you have to deal with them you could never understand just how inefficient and challenged they are. Not to start a political argument but if the VA is even a fraction of what universal government run healthcare would be like i cant understand why anyone with a half a brain would want it....your better off without because dealing with the crap they put you thru will almost drive you to suicide. We fax in the same papers almost weekly and by the end of the next week they have lost them and need another copy faxed in.

I know, we went through it with my father in law!! I cant remember how long it took him to get his benefits. He served in the Nam era, was a like a bomb tech or something in AF loading planes. He contacted planes that would of dropped Agent orange. He developed parkinsons, was it related??? But they said he was never in theater, but he said he did load planes that went there and he was in the south pacific feom what i recall him saying. He has passed now so i am not entirely sure. He hot a monthly check that went to pay for part of a full time sitter that was with him in the end.

Let me start by saying I’m saddened to hear of his illness. If I might make a small suggestion of another avenue to try- make a list of the run around he has gotten thus far, and make a run down to your Congressman’s office. If you put it out there that the V.A. is giving him the runaround and failing him, they might pick up the phone and raise hell for you. You wouldn’t believe how responsive the V.A. can be when they get a call from a member of the United States Congress’ office demanding answers as to why they are delaying care.
The part 2 of it is that if you are having to drive more than (x) miles for care at the V.A. he can apply for a waiver to go to his nearest hospital in the private sector. I think your Congressman’s office can push for that for him, too. I hope that it helps!

congressman has been contacted several times already....VA responded to them that they would be processing his application in the next 3-4 months. that was back in November. Last phone call to congressman resulted in the VA replying that they were working hard but due to more applications than normal they couldnt give a timeline for approval. that was last month sometime.

he is not getting his medical care at the VA. it is thru James Cancer Center in Columbus OH......he tried going to local hospitals for his blood and platelet transfusions and both times he tried that he ended up with infection in the central line so he refuses to go back.

The only good thing about it all is they back pay from the date application was accepted. But in your case if they keep "loosing" it:eek:??

Alwayse use certified return receipt with a signature on all documents that go to them.

I understand your frustration, fordf150, a good buddy of mine has bladder cancer, which they say is a direct result of water at Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps. VA Hospital is 125 miles one way. And who can drive that get chemo and feel good enough to come home. So I drive him down because for his service to our country it's the least we can do!

He's a great guy, did his service, black belt in some form of karate, grew up in Jersey, with former FBI director Comey, I'll tell stories but cost ya a :beerbbq:..
He's 12 years clean and sober but it's worth the trip ;)
