how about air quality causing umpires bad calls!! https://econjim.com/pdf/WP/AirQualityAndErrorQuantity/AirQualityAndErrorQuantityAppendix.pdf gonna be hard to watch the next game. oh the thought of air quality in the TROP?? Announcers, umpires, and players working in the worst stadium in the majors adding the humid air to the list of worsts!
Okay. So what I got out of that is that if the batter was to drop his pants(belt line) to the ground, the midline between the top of his pants and his shoulders would be lower than the recess below his kneecaps thus making it impossible for a pitcher to throw a strike.. Didn’t read the whole article but agree with DaveGunter One thing that I don’t see addressed is consistency of a single umpire between teams.. if he is calling strikes for one team and not the other, that is a problem. Learning an individual umpire’s strike zone is all part of the game and the responsibility of players and coaches alike.. it’s all part of the game... I’m a fan of the replay and a limit to the number of challenges such as they have in football. Perhaps with the technology available they could do something similar for baseball. I would think they would have to show that there is inconsistency in the calls rather than challenging a single ball or strike.. JMHO..
I have never watched it much to begin with, but I think it was back in 81 they had a strike. That was it. Confession....last summer I was "forced" into watching a live game in Detroit though. I think I made 'em wait long enough!
from the paper. "Figure A.5 shows average annual pollution levels during games and the mean probability of umpires making a correct call. Failing to account for these broad trends can lead to a spurious correlation between air quality and the accuracy of decision making." having trouble posting A.5, take a look back at it. ILLUSTRATES IMPROVED ACCURACY? Baseball will now need a pollution disclaimer for umps when pollution is out of control range! great how there are so many ways to make a living in the world. people actually got paid to produce this valuable needed info?
