DaveGunter and savemoney, I basically agree with you and when i was in rescue wouldn't have adopted a dog out unless those needs would be met. However there are other situations. Look at mine for example. I don't go out to get a dog or cat, wouldn't dream of it. They always find me. We have a bunch of acres and dogs show up here that don't have a place to go, most of them injured in some form or another. They are used to roaming and hunting for food, they don't understand fences. When Max came it was more like another person joined the family. Max doesn't think of himself as a "pet". He is independent and thinks he can take care of himself but wants to be part of our pack and so has accepted most but not all of the rules. At first he even tried to contribute to the food situation by bringing me rabbits etc. until he realized that i didn't really like that, he can't understand why.
Lucy on the other hand is totally willing to be a "pet" she loves walking on a leash doesn't mind being in a fence, as long as you love her. She costs about $400 a months to feed unless i find some other way. Quite honestly i can't afford the collars and don't believe they would stay for long on the dogs. These dogs are friendly and people are thieves. I did consider looking into the chips but haven't done that yet. I don't know if they make them now where they are strong enough to actually go over a longer distance and will they harm the dogs. Even though i am putting up a larger fence area right now they will still be let out to go with me. I think the quality of their lives is at least as important as their safety. Personally i'd rather be dead than locked up and have always been that way.

I totally respect what you do for your animals and realize everyone's situation is different.

I agree with you about fences, I have none, hence why I use a tracking collar, it is important to me to "let the dog be a dog", but do so safely, I know where my dogs are and they get some freedom. They are expensive, but I think of it this way; if my dog is lost I would pay just about anything to get them back...the tracking collar is cheap.

Lucy, I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are a Angel for the work you do with those poor lost dogs. Without your generous intervention and love, the odds are they would not survive. Every place is different. Here, we very rarely see a dog running lose. It was common when many years ago to see dogs in packs running. Now, no packs, and exceptionally rare to see a dog out and about without the owner nearby. I give you applause for your dog caring interventions. While you have no idea what you are getting into when a stranger dog wanders into your yard, you seem to know what to do. I am surprised they get along together as well as they do. I also want to thank you for sharing your experiences with these wanderers. It is heartwarming to know there are folks like you who are willing to sacrifice so much to help.

Guys, thanks. But I really am not looking for a pat on the back. I just don't know what else to do. You are lucky not to have so many puppy mills and irresponsible owners. Here that's an everyday thing. Making a buck on breeding dogs selling them to a broker and from there to the highest bidder. Spaying and neutering is still not the norm here so lots of unwanted litters. They usually get dumped somewhere. I used to think that trying to educate would make a difference but all I've seen is that it has gotten a lot worse over the last 20-30 years not better. Honestly I don't know what to do if this keeps up. Unfortunately dogs attract dogs.

And they don't always get along, I have two fenced in by themselves because Dudley will not tolerate other male dogs but gets along with Rosie so they stay together. It's sad because those two don't get as much attention as the others and never get to go with me for walks. Maybe we can change that if the boys will stay in their new fence.

DaveGunter i do so agree with this: What does a man need, really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in, and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. -Sterling Hayden

Yeah my situation is different too, I had an old rescue husky. He was at the end stages of his life when I got him. I have 25 acres and a quarter mile from the road my neighbor has 800 acres and the other neighbor has a thousand. Yeah there are houses on the road, 1/4 Mile Away, but the old husky didn't want to be in the house. He kind of lived in the horse barn and liked to wander. You couldn't catch him and he wouldn't get in the car but if you drove slow with your four way flashers on he would follow you back home. We had them for about three years before he finally passed. And the dog catcher would call me each year when school started and in the spring because old Balto would just follow the kids home off the school bus. He liked women and kids, not men. He was a good old boy and finally got to go and rest. We had a different relationship, he tolerated me but it was on his terms. Every other dog I had would obey commands.. Not Balto, he was a lead dog. Never fenced he would get out.. If forced inside, would do his business inside. Just wanted to be a cranky old man and do things his way!

Every one of us has "the" toy. You know, the toy we bought for fido that he or she has nothing to do with. It's usually the one that costs the most money, in case you didn't know. It's also the one you trip over most.

I'm my case. It's "the tire". It's recycled tires literally, indestructible, weighs 9 pounds, and lifetime warranty. Cost something like $35 iirc. Too dammed expensive to toss in the trash. Even if Cletus hasn't touched it since Hitler was a corporal.

Bentley broke the curse of the tire tonight. 4.5 Years of Him not wanting it changed finally.....with no help from me.

    Mind. BLOWN.

Your situation sounds just like mine. We have 24 acres and 1500 on one side and 500 on the other. Closest neighbors a bit 0ver 1/4 mile away. Max likes me and listens some but he is a man's dog you can tell whenever there are men visiting. His house manners are good, he was house broken and learned very quickly not to steal food. He even likes to come inside to sleep on the bed when he wants to., not when you call him. But other than that it's his life and he wants to live it his way. Even though it's causing me gray hair.
Today he came back without his collar, he might have gotten hung on something. I need to find a safety collar so he can get out of it. Unless somebody took it off, it was a regular buckle collar, it couldn't have snapped.

We've gotten the new fences and gates up and 3 confused puppies. Max watched us, checked out a few places and then came into the cabin as if to say "got to sleep on that one" Noe is confused he heard something and wanted to run but got stopped by the fence. He doesn't know what to make of it. Teddy on the other hand looked around and this seems all too familiar to him. He checked the bottoms (which aren't secured yet) and then went into the house and checked to see if any windows were open. Apparently he has gotten out that way before, not that he can jump now with his legs, poor puppy. Wonder what's going to happen when the coyotes are howling later.
I feel for them but hope it works out. This is only about 300' perimeter. We want to close in about 4 acres later. The way it is now makes getting around for us a bit of a pain.

Fun with the kitten today, WWW is steaming crab for his bday dinner, I looked over there and he was next to the pot licking his lips just like this pic, wish I could locate the pic of him coming at WWW like a bear for crab (that brought his appetite back after being so sick for so long). Meanwhile lil one is running circles in the house with a frozen leg while he chases :picard:

He was also hilarious this afternoon, I bought a little helium tank and blew up some balloons, guess too full as 3 of the popped spontaneously from the ceiling texture so him and the dogs spent most the day in the bedroom on the bed. He came out of the bedroom after a several hour nap with his hackles up, tail all puffed out which we have never seen before. It was the gold mylar balloons that won't float :wacky:.
