Hello, I want to put in a security camera system for my small home. I know I want night vision and a recording system. I am not really interested in being able to view it on my phone (a nice option, but not a must have). I figure 8 outdoor cameras under the eaves would be more than enough and the cable runs would be under 60 ft. each Would be nice (not a must have) the ability to put 1 camera with a longer cable of 200 feet that would still work well...maybe a wireless camera (if it can produce a decent image). Is there an inexpensive system out there? Any name brand to look for or avoid? I would prefer to buy from a big box store since they have a great return policy in general. Thank you in advance for your input/experience/advice.
Netgear makes a bunch of wireless cameras that link to your computer and record. Personally I think the ability to send the recording to your computer is pretty good. (If you can set it as off site) I have an off site server I built that’s at another location and it receives a copy of my current cameras as well as the one in my house. If somebody steals your computer you still have a copy that way. I’ve been looking hard at them myself. We have a very good security system however I want to add some cameras to a few other places. I have 1 Ring Video camera and I really like it. I do want to see what’s going on when I’m at work so this might not be the best for you. The Ring has cloud storage for $2.50 a month. The video quality is really good. It has 2 led motion spotlights which are great too.
The Trick with night vision is to have extremely low lux requirements on the cameras - the ones sold in the sets are less than adequate in that respect. Lights tend to make things bloom, blotting out what you really need to see, or do not reach far enough. We had that problem around the shop - put cams in that do not need infrared- picked off several light fingered perps that way. At the time those cams were under $200 ea.
I also have the Ring floodlight camera and have nothing but positive things to say about it and their customer service. Excellent products and support. Comes in either black or white. Floodlight Cam
I have both ring and blink. I think blink is more afordable and has good ratings. Multiple setting so you can select what is best for you.
I've got a 6 camera 4k lorex set up with dvr. The video quality is stellar. It runs 24/7. It saves about a week with the 2 tb drive but you can easily add more hard drives. I plan on adding 2. It's very easy to take screenshots or clips of video and put it right onto a USB stick for giving to police or uploading online. Each cable is 100 feet but can get a 300 foot one if needed. I have them under the eaves and 2 on the sides of the house. They run thru the attic and then into a closet in the spare room. You want to lock the dvr up. I'll take some pics later.
I have this same system and its outstanding. Runs 24/7 and will not start overwriting until 2 full weeks. I can go back that far. Its not the 4k but its the 1080p and its 5 years old and I have not had to touch it in all those years. Most times, Ill rewind it to see what dog took a dump on my porch or which way the trampoline blew when it left, so Ive been lucky. Who knows, maybe they have saved me from a break in. The night vision lights up at night so they are visable. Check into Lorex, well worth it. Plus way cheaper now since the 4k ultras came out.
Thanks guys, I have been looking at the Defender series through Home Depot. It has good online ratings and offers a package with 8 cameras that I can afford. How significant is it to have 2 TB vs 1 TB??? It's a $100 difference and that is a bit more than I care to spend right now.
I have the 2TB system and can record non stop for 2 weeks before it overwrites. I think you would be fine with 1 TB and having a full week of recording. Unless you plan on taking a longer than a week vacation.
What's a vacation?...Ugh...been a long time since I have done that, I like to think of my place in the country as a bit of a vacation every day....Thanks for the info on the 1 TB.
