In 2010 when we lived in the city, we had 4 trees removed and they had to be brought down in pieces. Two large cherry trees, one small fir tree, and a one that I don't recall (maybe another cherry). I had three arborists come give bids. Two of them really wanted the work so I kept using the other company's bid to decrease the other's bid. I think I paid $2400. When the owner of the company I hired came out to do the work, he was upset with the person doing the bid because he claimed he wasn't making any money off this job. Hopefully you can do the same.

I have a couple pictures from when I was building my fence which shows the trees (and a couple after photos) . FYI, we just bought the house and I put the fence in right away because I needed it fenced for my dogs. We had the trees taken down months later. We didn't have wood heat at the time so I ended up selling the firewood, but I also traded some of it with someone who ground the stumps down for me.

Warner from what we can see in the picture, I can see any damage. What is the reason for taking them down? Even in clumps like that those type trees can stay healthy for many, many moons. Of course, if worried about the limbs on the house side those would easily be taken down.

Take a pic or 2 of the tree leaning on the house (not the stump). Yep it just blew over...
tell the appraiser you had to get it off the house right away...
    they pay the damages...

15 or so years ago we had about 25 white pines taken down, about 8 feet off the side of the house. The tree service wanted $1500 a piece to take them down. A couple of loggers working nearby did the whole job for $300.

I paid $900 cash for two pro's that worked 8 hours... They had to climb and piece the tree down.

Had 3 estimates and they were all in the same territory and these were pro's that did this as side jobs on weekends.

Really depends on the level of experience you need for your situation.

It’s really the wife that’s concerned about how the one is leaning tword the house. My boys bedroom is above the sunroom in the path of least resistance.

I like the trees but it’s not worth the battle. I’ll grab my bro in laws pole saw and cut the house side branches off and see if that gets an approval.

It's pretty simple to deal with really. Just put an add on CL for free wood in exchange for taking the tree down. They must be licensed of course!

I'm no longer a fan of large trees close enough to a house that it could do extensive damage or even bodily injury .
Top close enough to knock trim boards or gutters off is really no big deal but if a hefty enough part of heavy trunk could do some damage it really should go.
As much as I like the shade and coolth, plant smaller trees or - start over and when they get big enough again cut 'em down and start over.
Replace one big tall tree with several smaller ones. So if they should get uprooted/blown over in a big storm they can't do a lot of damage.

Or, consider odds. I find most storms around here that knock trees down the damaging wind comes from the East, Northeast and North. So if your house is west, southwest or west from that tree the odds are great that in a typical storm could do storm damage to the house. If your house is in another direction then odds are your house is statistically safer. If it should come down, odds are it will -over there-.

If it's just the imposing size and proximity to the house, then what you gonna do ? Lose it. Start over. Plant another one.

Bare minimum, keep an eye on the health of the tree.

If nothing else you'll get a couple cords of wood out of it. Might be expensive cords, might not.

    Coolth eh?

I hear you on the big trees. Prevailing winds ususually blow trees back away from my house of they come down, but I have a 100ish foot pine in front of my house that offers me no shade, and is only good for dropping needles and soap on my car. I think I would need to cut it while my wife is away. I'm keeping a close eye on it though.

I totally agree with this. My lady had about 3 trees dropped in her yard last summer, they just cut it down and she worried about all the brush. 15 trips to the dump to clear out branches if I recall. If nothing else happens to chains or whatever this sounds like a decent deal.

Yeah, soap. That tree is nature's car wash.

Sap usually falls from pines, right? Stupid auto correct.

Well I was at my buddy’s yesterday having a couple beverages and bsing. I mentioned that I wanted to take the trees down knowing he has family in the business. He immediately says” my dad will do it”. His father is retired from the logging business and has moved 6 hours away. I have worked on his truck a few times in the past and we have enjoyed a couple hunting trips together great guy! My bud called him and told him what’s up. Dad says I’ll be there next Saturday morning I need a break from your mother. Guess retirement isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

I gotta get the iron bird hangers grandpa made chiseled out today.

1000.00 Would be a bargain in my area if you throw bag a line high enough should be no problem to pull over just remember maple
does not hinge well and is apt to snap hinge so make it go over fast other option would be find a climber most around here do side work cost is @400.00 per day and work with them would contain the mess and be safer Good luck

It's amazing how much brush it is when it's on the ground vs up in a tree. I've had numerous trees taken down at my house and I always have them chip the brush and leave the good stuff.

My last job was 1 Mulberry and 5 pines, the biggest one being 60-75ft. $800 to drop them all and take the brush. They had power lines on one side and my shed on the other side of the biggest pines. I thought $800 was a great deal. I always pay cash and let them know beforehand I like cash deals.
