I watched a 100' white pine get dropped today. It was damaged and needed to come down. It came down in 3 long lengths. I suspect I'll be involved in cleaning it up some. I chatted up the tree service. He asked if I wanted free hardwood. What? So, I gave him contact info and he'll call when he is cutting in the area. Time will tell if I hear from him. That tree was a mess, and a hazard just waiting to happen. If it was left to fall on its own, what would it have hit?
Lots of shoulder season wood in that tree.. you don't have much else going on with firewood at the moment, right Mike?
My acrosd the street neighbor had a big pine cut down last week. The other day I saw the side of his truck bed all mashed down. I guess a limb from that tree must have fallen on it during the last storm.
It was back leaning from the direction you see it being felled. They used a rope puller to encourage it to fall where they face cut it. If left to its own, the house could have been hit. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk

Having a few tree services giving you wood is the way to go if you can pull it off. Hopefully he means delivered free. He offered so don’t let him forget you. Give him a friendly call in a few months if you don’t hear from him. In my experience you get used when it is convient. So it might be a long time before you see any wood, but when it’s convient you get dumped upon in a big way.
This just amazes me, it might have something to do with the cost of land and taxes. Here every tree trimming company, puts all firewood in their back lot and processes it during down time. They are our firewood sellers basically. But I'm glad it works out for you guys that get this service!
That's the MO here as well. There are no more free dumps so all the landscape/arborists either are in the firewood business to some extent or dump hardwood at the guy in town with a processor that doesn't charge to dump or might pay a small amount for logs that will go thru his processor. There's one sawmill in town and driving by yesterday I see he has a larger than usual stack of big pine logs. Last I knew he did mostly contract work and didn't stock a lot of lumber. So, likely, those big logs belong to a customer for a project [/speculation].

I like that last picture. However, I think my backside would be much further away from the big boy as it falls! I don't trust trees as much as that guy! I'm just part chicken I guess.
Yep, photos capture an instant in time, not the full story. I figure anyone felling a tree that size is either a pro or just crazy!
