Her First Tree!

Some of you who know me know my wife and I are avid cyclists and members of Warm Showers, a hospitality network for folks traveling long distance by bicycle. We have a traveller cycling from New Orleans to Montreal, Canada staying with us today. In Canada she is a cabinet maker by trade. She saw my chainsaw and said: "Will you show me how to use a chainsaw?"

So what kind of a person would I be if I said no?!? So after a couple of hours of lessons and demonstrations I let her try cutting a few rounds. She did well but the she said: "Can I drop a tree?"

Hmmmm..... I showed her how to cut an open face notch then let her try cutting a couple on some taller stumps. She seemed to handle that task well.

So then I said pick a tree and tell me why you choose it, then, tell me what notch you will use and show me where its going to land. She gave me the correct answers so, what could I do? So I handed her the saw and said go for it! She put that tree down within 5" of the wedge I stuck in the ground.

I did not take pictures of her cutting because I want wanted to pay attention to what she was doing and make sure we were both safe. Nice whiskers on that tree! (MS 362 w/16" bar & chain)

Question, after the flooding, I don't remember catching if your splitter is up and running fine or not.
Any updates on that?

 

Yep, the splitter is running! It doesn't seem any worse for the experence.

I didn't figure it suffered anything catastrophic, as you knew to service everything prior to trying to run it again. But thought it worth asking.

 

Pretty cool and I would say you did a good job on the instructions.

She did good too and I would be willing to bet she will not forget what she has learned.

 

Or how fun it was.

Right now she is reading the book How to Fell a Tree!

 

I recently purchased that book, as well as 'Knots at work', haven't read them through yet, but will.

 

I have the book on How to Fell a Tree and found it to be a good read. It also confirmed what I already knew about some things.

Best I could do for her was earplugs! I gave her my chaps but they were impossibly too big on her; she's only about 5' tall and 100 pounds with both pockets full of quarters. However, this subject was discussed in depth!

 

Unfortunately I don't have a shop or equipment for that trade.

 

Oh yeah, me too! The 362 was scary enough for me.

 

Thanks for size of saw.. compared to her size I thought it was a Big saw.

 

She's no bigger than a Georga peantut! She makes the 362 look like an 880!
