I joined here a while ago and have been reading a lot and trying to learn as much as I can. I plan to buy and install a wood stove to be ready for next winter (2018/19). Lots of great info here. Seems like a great resource. Based on what I have read so far, my number one priority needs to be the wood pile. I'm off to a start anyway. Two weeks ago I cut and hauled about 1/3rd cord of maple that had to be removed for a septic install on a property. Last saturday was a large pile of downed dead Elm. It looks to be about a cord and a half. I can have all I want. Have one pickup load of the Elm home. Couple more loads to go. Will start splitting and stacking as soon as I can. Glad to have another hour of daylight in the eve's after work. I will have a good amount of wood to scrounge from friends and family.

Welcome to the site jwv3 as you've lurked for a bit, you know it's a great site full of good people and a LOT of good information. That's a nice load of wood, should serve you well. Any thoughts on the stove yet?? Insert/standalone Does your house have a chimney already or will you be putting one in?? I see Eric VW already hounded you for pics.. I'd watch out for that one if I were you. I see I'm too late, you fed the beast. He won't go away now.

Yes! Thanks for the welcome guys. Great site. Lots of good people with a lot to learn from. I'm going to install a free standing wood stove. Nothing existing in my house, so it looks like a class A, double wall prefabricated chimney system. I still have a lot to research, but I'm leaning toward Woodstock stoves and Blaze Kings.

See, now you've scared off jwv3 and it's HIS thread. I've never had McGoats, are they better than McNuggets?? But I've got plenty of Totes, they are quite handy.
Welcome,I hope your experience working up the elm doesn't discourage you. It is one of the most twisted up woods you can try to chop up. I wouldn't attempt it without a wood splitter.
Welcome to the club , jwv3! Glad you found us and thanks for joining up and posting! Looks like you're on the right track. Either of those stoves are a great choice. There are many here that have those. I love my IS. It was really a step up in size from the Fireview. I get more heat, longer burn times, use less wood and there are always coals to reload on. Keep scrounging for anything that is standing dead or already down with the bark off. Look for fast drying stuff and figure on any oak not being ready for a while. Love that old dodge!
X2 ^^^ I also was debating between Woodstock and Blaze King, I finally decided I really liked the looks, as well as the price tag on the WS Ideal Steel with soapstone. I couldn't be happier with my decision, but then again, I have no experience with Blaze King stoves to compare it to. One of the biggest things that swayed me was the WS 6 month buyback guarantee. I figure if they'll let you use it for 6 months and still buy it back if you're not happy, they are VERY confident in their product. I know I won't be paying to ship mine back.
