The only tires I have ever had blow out were trailer tires. Trailer tires are notorious for blow outs! They are THE cheapest things a manufacturer can buy that meet the regulations of DOT. It should be a crime for putting junk tires on trailers!!!
Yeah, the first one was on I80 and I couldn't get the lug nuts off with my tire iron. Had to drop the camper on the berm and run to the next exit and bought a 2' breaker bar and deep well sockets. Then I hooked back up and changed the tire with trucks blasting past at 70-80 mph. Half of which wouldn't move over...I had 2 jacks and everything else to block it up. The second time I had just got off the turnpike and only went a couple miles and bang... Was able to pull into a paved lot and was back on the road in 15 minutes...I carry an 18v cordless, impact sockets and now a 12 ton bottle jack. I can't even count how many tires I've blown off the snowmobile trailer. There's a section of I95 in Maine that I nicked named the Bidderford triangle...
Yeah. It was on a stretch where they could see a 1/2 mile, too. You didn't think those trucks would move over didya?!?
Most trucks will, at least those who know what they are doing... I do remember noticing when we had the motor home that when driving on the Interstate and someone pulled off, I would move over and then almost everyone behind me would do the same. It's always worth a try and maybe they will make it a habit.
I do it every chance I get in hopes to influence others aside from the fact that it's just basic safety.
Back when I drove tow trucks and had to change car tires on the side of the road i.swear people would try to see how close they could get to me. Then I started taking the tire either going on or off a bit behind me to my right, so the center would be just behind my foot. Suddenly, I always had a nice wide berth. When I moved into a heavy duty tow tow truck, I got in the habbit of opening the very front tool box door when would climb out. That had similar results. Got all of the other drivers in the habit too. My boss liked it so much that he had reflective stickers made with an arrow and "move over" that we put inside that door on all the trucks.
Sounds like a good idea. I too have been known to place something so that vehicles would move over further but always feared some idiot would see if he could hit it...
This was my trailer today. It is mud city here, but I could not stand to not be doing something, so I loaded up this big rig and dragged it into the woodlot behind the house. Cut a bunch a buckthorn, treated the stumps, and burned the slash. Will pick up the logs at a later date with something a little bigger. No tire issues!
