Nor a beard like that, hopefully. ;)

I will hand split ash when I come across it, and use wedges to section off big rounds I can't lift/roll into the truck. Other than that, 15 cord/yr demands hydraulics if I want to do something other than split wood with my "free" time. :)

As far as splitting, I do a mixture of both. Depends how I'm feeling and what kind of wood it is I'm working with. Oak or cherry I split a lot by hand. But the harder stuff to split I tend to use the hydro power. Depends if I have gas too or not and if I feel like running to town to get any haha.

    Did the same last year!
Pulled the splitter out a few times, but spent more days with splitting axe.
    And got more done!

I don't own a hydro so I only split by hand. Rarely do I use a wedge. On big rounds I "shingle" off the outsides of the round until it's small enough to split.

Gotta say, I didn't know as many here still split manual rather than hydraulic, not surprised though.

I only found this thread while researching what in the heck "noodling" was.

I started our woodburning 'adventure' splitting by hand, because I had no splitter.
My friend stopped by one day to help me out.. well, he borrowed his FIL splitter and brought it over, we did in a couple of hours what it would have taken me all summer to do manually.
edit.. me and my friend split the cost of a Cub Cadet 25T splitter the next spring.

I have beaten the heck out of my maul and sledge, and I just wasn't doing things right.

For me, hydraulics saves the day and gets the work done.

Although I do admit that splitting wood is great recreation and exercise. I don't do as much as I should, but I do enjoy it once I get going.

I loved splitting with an 8 lb maul, wedges, and an axe for smaller stuff until a failed back surgery left me with intractable pain in my entire left side. Sitting in front of a vertical splitter with a pickaroon ala Backwoods Savage works very well for me now. I’m glad for hydraulics or I’d be buying all my wood cut and split and missing out on half the fun!

Large displacement saw, medium to long bar, followed by a few hits with sledge/wedges or various mauls makes life much easier.Still splitting manually at 55,almost 39 yrs now.

I work much slower now than when younger, take more frequent breaks. Not in a big rush to do much anything anymore.
