Could be a different species, but the pics look exactly like what I have. I get zero lumps when I burn it, just white fluffy ash.

That is an excellent example of what happens with elm when it is cut and split green.

Siberian elm is all I’ve had the chance to work up....stanky stuff when green off the stump. Puke worthy, to say the least:rofl:

I've tried that, results were the same as my above pic. They were deep frozen too.

I'd agree. This was cut 8/17 and split 11/17. Fortunately, I'll never know what it's like to split it dry.

Split some elm today. The ones in the sun were stringy...the ones in the shade on ice remaining from the snowbank popped pretty clean.

Foot Pedal Valve. Watching your video just inspired me Dennis. What about a foot operated valve for splitting sitting down? Would allow both hands for positioning. Heck, it might be pretty good in horiz mode as well? Now I'm dreaming up a quick disconnect two-way foot pedal in my mind! :nerd:

It might work but you also need to think about the return. Guess a spring would work out well for that.

What if a split rolled off the pile and depressed the pedal at the wrong moment? :pain:

That could lead to a visit from ol’ Murph....unless the foot switch had a guard over top of the actual switch.

    Something like this...

This old elm, out behind my barn, has been dead for at least 12 years. This pic was taken 6 years ago. Now all that's left is a 14 foot tall standing trunk. Bark is gone. I'll cut it for firewood at some point.

Notice the proper technique too, seated on a dairy crate. ... machine at attention (vertical)
