I should add that my last employer is one of my best customers. Is it possible that you can get work from your current employer ?

Congrats!! You're on the right track ! I'm humbled you chose that name, but it's a good one, very identifiable and not locked into a location.
Keep saving up, you'll be where you want to be in no time. (I have thoughts about that as I've seen what works/doesn't for the little guys)...at least here.
    Rooting for you !!

Yes. I do light machine work for my employer all the time. I bill them 3X my in-shop hourly wage. No problems.

Pretty doubtful, they do the big stuff, with over 400 employees it would probably be a waste of their time, plus I'd certainly have to pick up insurance, pay for certs, and add a lot of overhead for me. Nonetheless, if it came down to it, they know the work I do, and I wouldn't rule it out.

    That's incredible!
There's so much work out there for anyone who wants to go get it, I simply don't hate my job enough, if it were my last employer I would've been on my own years ago. That and having the room and equipment part.

shaggy wood dump hoarder Depending on where you live, you may want to check to see if there are any zoning issues with having a business at your home. Down here in La Crosse Co. you would probably need some kind of a conditional use permit.
It would be great if you didn't have to have that kind of hassle but just to be on the safe side it wouldn't hurt to check.

I'm out in the country 5 miles from City limits, on a dead end road, shouldn't have to worry about anything right? One neighbor on this dead end, 200 yards from the shop

Even the county may have zoning laws as well as your township. Wouldn't hurt to check. Do you have any friends who live out of town and run a business from their home similar to what you are thinking of? May want to ask them if you don't want to alert the "powers that be".
