Severe Weather ?

Following a pair of storms that brought snow, ice and rain to the eastern United States around Christmas, stormy weather may once again take shape during the final days of 2017.

There are early indications that ingredients can come to together for another winter storm in parts of the East later this week and into next weekend.

The main piece of energy responsible for this developing storm will move into the Pacific Northwest during the middle of the week.

The arctic air hung up across the northern U.S. would force this feature toward the southern U.S., where it would pick up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and possibly strengthen.




A large area of high pressure expected to be over the Northeast later this week could assist in the southern storm's development by pushing cold air down to the Southern states.

As the cold air from the north undercuts the push of warmer, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, a significant ice event could unfold. This could impact areas from the mid- to lower Mississippi Valley to the mid-Atlantic and Carolinas.

Areas farther north would receive mainly snow.

The remainder of the South will be warm enough for mainly rain. It does not appear that any widespread severe weather will occur.

As this stormy weather unfolds in the South, another weak storm over the Upper Midwest may allow snow to return to the Plains and Midwest on Thursday and Friday, according to AccuWeather Long Range Meteorologist Max Vido.

The interaction of these two storms will determine how the Northeast will be impacted.

“The potential for a more substantial snowfall will be possible across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast if the northern storm links up with the southern storm,” Vido said.

Lesser impacts are possible should the two storms fail to interact and the southern storm tracks eastward out to sea. However, a stronger interaction of the two could force the southern storm to make a turn northeastward up or just off the Atlantic Coast.

The latter scenario could increase snow potential from Washington, D.C. to New York City and Boston into next weekend.

“Timing will be essential to whether or not this region sees a significant winter storm,” Vido said. “Nevertheless, the bountiful cold will mean that somewhere will likely see a return to wintry weather before the new year.”

 

It's a ways off but on January 22 they have another half inch of rain coming in, I don't think that with the weather we'll be having that the brook will be clear of the ice.

It's nothing big today but might be worth following.

We havent had much snow this winter. For the last couple weeks theres been more grass showing than snow. The poor folks at the weather office havent had anyone paying attention to them the last while and I think theyre not liking it too much. Today, they issued a "special weather advisory" for my city. We're supposed to get FOUR WHOLE INCHES tonight. Lol. In Canada in January ???!!! It cant be !! It just cant be !!! I think I know where to find the poster children for the new AWD (attention whore disease) signs. Rofl !!!!

 

The snow here will pickup if this doesn't split and go north and south of us.

5-8 inches so it's not that bad.......unless I was plowing with the truck.

 

We didn't get any snow overnight but it started after we had coffee this morning, they're still saying we'll get a good 7-8.

 

Well we got 2 inches yesterday and snow day today schools cancelled. Not a big snow.. 6 to 10 inches expected.

 

I think our school is getting out at noon.......just enough time in for state aid.

The main roads are getting slick and the side roads are already past that.

 

The well-inland path will translate to warmer and mostly liquid precipitation from Texas to Massachusetts on east and south.

However, a few pockets of cold air may remain at the onset of the storm to cause black ice issues from the Appalachians to the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts, despite mostly rain from the storm.

While much of this area can expect milder air with plain rain, fog may become dense enough to lead to delays on the highways and for airline passengers.

The area from Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas to much of Missouri, central and southern Illinois, much of Indiana, northern and central Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and central and northern New England is likely to get a wintry mix from the storm that includes some ice.

The swath from northeastern Kansas and eastern Nebraska to much of Iowa, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is likely to receive mostly snow from the storm. There is the potential for a few inches, depending on the storm's strength.

At this time, enough snow is likely to fall to make roads and sidewalks slippery and force crews to plow and apply a fresh dose of ice-melting products.

The storm will cap a week-long siege of snow and travel disruptions, including airline delays and multiple-vehicle accidents with the worst conditions in the Midwest.

I guess it's time to move some snow.

 

Same here. I fully expect a delay tomorrow. It transitioned back to snow when I was just outside cleaning up, supposed to drop to 20 by morning. Everything is a slushy mess, can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

 

This coming Friday & Friday night there could be a Northeast Coastal Storm, if not snow then we can have rains with high winds.
