Hi guys just wondering if anyone has built a kindling splitting machine I have access to free loads of 2x4 and similar building site offcuts dumped on my property for free during the hot months as the recycler has to pay to dump it. Last year I split about 70 or so wheat bags by hand for many of my old friends enjoyed helping them out, But body is wearing out so need to make a powered version Have seen plenty on you tube but no plans or how to's anybody achieved this cheers pete

My son uses an electric log splitter to make pine into kindling.
Probably plenty for a good price used

This is not electric driven, but is worth watching in my opinion.

do you make any mods to the splitter multi point wedge or similar can buy one brand new for 400 bucks at bunnings/similar to walmart thanks for the replies as shoulder and elbow wont stand up to another winters splitting with an axe

Around here the electric splitters are not that expensive, a little over $ 200 new at harbor freight, and used for similar prices.
They won't handle big tough wood because they are only rated a 3-7 tons.
Gas splitters are much more capable, but used ones don't loose value much at all from new prices.
Adding extra wedges reduces the ability of the splitter

I would think a small, electric splitter would be best.

Those are good for getting smaller splits for your stick burning smoker. Smokers are usually fairly low volume wood burners so an electric splitter is overkill and takes up unnecessary space. You just need to keep an axe or maul handy for the big ones that don’t fit through the top ring.

I like the Kindling Cracker, it's fast, easy , safe , portable
I make my kindling 1" and smaller so it really does make it quicker , easier and safer than using my 4lb firewood friend or a hatchet
I guarantee it's quicker than my electric or gas splitter.

I think if I had to make lots of kindling I would make a multi wedge that would slide over the single wedge on my electric kinetic 7 ton splitter. But even with just the single wedge , its so fast that it takes very little time it split .
Would be easy enough to set it up on a bench tall enough so the splits fell into a clean barrel or trash can with a bag in it. Or an oil drum with both ends removed so it could be lifted up and off the bag when it got full.

After doing a little more looking, here are a few ideas for producing kindling with an electric or regular log splitter. They are several more options as well, once one starts looking. If one is fabricating a wedge, be sure to make it have larger exit holes than the entrance holes. I saw one you tube video where there machine was starting to bog down, I assume because of lack of clearance.

Yep some good stuff there I often view with envy the prices you guys can get stuff for in the states here in australia not so lucky, i have a 12 ton gas splitter that does most of my firewood and if that don't split it one of my old macs will, Thanks for the vids useful stuff there will get an electric splitter and modify a wedge for it, I will be using processed lumber from home sites given to me by the 6 cubic metre dumpster load when I want it have 3 loads waiting to start on got to get all the broken pallets and junk wood out first but that will all burn, have to denail a lot of the home reno timbers so I dont stick myself like i did last year, Have a bone marrow problem so thats why I am going the machine route instead of by hand,
