Uncle Sam made me shave everyday when I was in the 82nd. I developed a dislike for it and now "shave " with electric trimmers to knock down the tall stuff. I haven't seen my face smooth in about 15 years. As a kid I always watched my dad shave with the shaving cream and brush.
Funny you should say that, my wife got me one of those for x-mas this year, a brush and cream. Used it a couple times, it's alot different than what's in the can but I do like the smell of the cream vs. the canned stuff.
You are familiar with both sides of that, waxing and shaving. And I'm glad because I'm happy to not be a part of the waxing community.
I think He is talking about old style shaving with a brush and a safety razor shaver. My brother does for whatever reason. Says its a 10-15 min job to do. I'm pretty much a 15 min chit, shower, shave kind of guy. I had plans on growing a zz top beard after I got out of the service, but I found out my face doesn't grow hair well. After 6 months I had something that looked like I had been tossed in a trash can of pubes with glue on my face. I guess I should have expected it, in the service I usually only had to shave every other day. I just use hair clippers and kept it at 1/4" or so and it doesn't look too bad.
The brush and shave soap method works good for those with delicate skin, I used it for years before discovering that the facial cleanser I was already using does an even better job.
I would have thought a few would have been doing this already. What it is is basically going back to either double edge or straight razor shaving. Nate's brother seems to be doing this. If you hate shaving, this is one way to actually make it enjoyable. Plus, you can save money, unless you get RAD, (razor addiction disorder) in which case it's as bad as CAD and the like. We've been led to believe that cartridge shaving is great. At 4 bucks a pop for Fusions and other cartridges you can see how expensive it's been. I use a double edge most of the time now and spend about .40 a blade and have fun shaving and getting a much closer shave. Yeah, it becomes a ritual and takes time, but it's a hobby for tens of thousands of guys. I have started to collect some straights and double edge razors. Kinda cool and doesn't have to cost you too much. I'm sure it isn't everyone's thing, but I find it to be fun, and you would be amazed at the amount of guys on forums. Just something else to do when not cutting and splittin'.
I get the medium priced cartridges from the dollar shave club, they are better than the ones gillete sells. Of course, a pack of heads last me about six months because I just shave around the beard and don't replace until cartridges are actually dull.
Ah Grizz, thy name be frugality. If I shave counter to growth direction, I can shave every other day. If I follow growth, every day,......except I don't. Used to just use water, but I've gotten back into using the shaving cream in a can. I use some inexpensive triple blade dealios from somewhere, and use 'em a long time because I don't have a real heavy beard. I've used some from the dollar store that I almost threw away after the first shave. My face looked like someone had tried to kill me with a thousand tiny facial cuts and nicks. One of my nephews is like that. I swear that boy can shave, then have a ZZ Top beard in about 3 hours. It's scary.
Man, I'm frugal but I'm not going to shave with a dull blade. After a couple weeks these things are on par with the gillete ones, that's when I throw them away.
I got into shaving with a safety razor and brush about 6 years ago. The price of Fusion blades was getting crazy (and at the time I worked for P&G and got them at a discount), and I couldn’t get a close shave on my neck without razor bumps. With a safety razor I could get an even closer shave everywhere and no bumps. And, like mentioned, the blades are way cheaper. With practice I could even be finished within 3-4 minutes, so it didn’t add too much time to my mornings. But about a year after that, the hair on my head started getting pretty thin, so I started shaving that too. And I’ve used a safety razor on my head, but it takes a LONG and is a little scary time so I started using a FUSION on my head. And I soon realized that I look pretty funny with a clean shaved face and bald head, so now I always keep about a week’s worth of growth on my face during the summer, and let it get long in the winter. I do miss the whole “wet shave” experience though. It really was something I looked forward to every morning.
