Does anyone have a source of supply for felling dogs like the ones that come on the 661, but for the 441? The dealer looked at me like I had two heads, but called Stihl and was told they don’t make them.
Do you mean the skeleton spikes? Those didn’t come stock on my 661; I think I ordered them the next day. Gotta have those weight savings amirite? I don’t know if Stihl makes any but it looks like knockoffs can be had on eBay that will fit. Or if you were just looking for bigger non-skeleton spikes I’m sure you can find some of those too.
Called around a bit, and a few of the Stihl dealers in logging country recommended Pro-Safety dogs...Bailey’s is carrying them, and they seem like a good product.
It was interesting...I talked to the Pro-Safety guy, and he let me know that only the 660 and up can use the 5-tooth dogs...the bottom dog hangs below the saw, and works like an auto feed that keeps the saw chewing into the wood. That behavior will bog down the smaller saws too much.
Nonsense! Send her out for a port job & muffler mod, you'll be fine! There's guys here that can make that saw speak a whole new language.
IMO the pro safety dog look too big. I have these on my 064. Stihl MS661 dog dawg ALUMINUM spike front cover side skeletonize custom laser | eBay
MS361 ported by Tree Monkey with 5-tooth pro safety dogs. I think they are a little too big. Wish I would have gotten the 4 tooth MS261 stock dogs, MS361 w/ Pro Safety 5 and MS461 with Ebay dogs from customchainsaw parts.
The spikes on your 461....are they weak or flimsy? Bend easily? They look nice and are about the right size for that saw
On the 441. The dogs that come on the R model are good dogs ! Any bigger, longer or lower and they would be too much. Any smaller and they wouldn't get ahold when putting in a Humboldt face cut.
My point is the factory R model dogs are very good . And your dealer should be able to order you a set. They also had a good chain catcher which hopefully would come assembled. So, 4 bolts out. 4 bolts in with a bit of 271 lock tite on them and your good to go.
Stihl has always in the past put good to Great dogs on their West Coast models. Many of the Pro Safety west coast dogs were very good. Husky on the other hand was hit and miss on some of their dogs.
These may look cool. But , dogs take a major thrashing in professional use. I would be surprised if those would last a week falling timber. Maybe with a half wrap they would endure a little better ????? The 4 point , steel , Pro Safety dogs from 25 years ago were about as good as there could be on the 064.
