yep time consuming process- done 3 of 5.4L and one v10. last one first plug came out easy pezy- that was the only one. Funny that was my 06 also. best to pull the oem plugs out before 80K, over the course of the last 5 years the cost of the timing components has dropped apx 50%. Big problem now is DI fuel system vs PCV system ( which is gunking up the intake valves).
That would have helped for sure! I just needed to get under it a few times so still needed the height. A lower position would have saved my squeezes guts and bruised ribs from laying over the core support
What a pain in the arse!! I have a friend that had this motor in his Ferd. When it started missing, he decided to sell the truck in stead of going through the process you just did. Did all the research and saw the problems like you had.
Very nice job. A lot of work, saved good money. The engineer that designed that needs flogged. Now you need to remember to take them out and put them back in yearly so it does not happen again.
I wish I would have known what was about to go down the first night before I started. As long as she runs another year or more it was worth the pain.
No big deal I'll put some new spark plugs in What a bunch of bullcrap, but you got er done man Being a short guy, I have a hard time working on my Tahoe Even my Jeep but, guess what I use for that, an all purpose milk crate
Backwoods Savage someone’s calling you I think..... I reverted to the ol 6’ step ladder go up two steps turn and use the step to support toes or shins depending on the reach needed
For years and years I’ve been putting a small amount of anti seize on plug threads, at the moto shop too.
I think he (she) should be My '03 5.4 (2V) just started with a miss...I bought the truck used so I dunno exactly what I'm gonna run into...it is supposed to have a Jasper reman engine in it 70-80k ago...we'll see what happens I guess. I'm gonna go talk to my mechanic buddy for advice/tips first...they work on a ton of these things...
I think the 2valve engines are a little different design. Could be wrong but I heard of plugs blowing out of the heads because of the threads blowing out!
Yeah, it is different...I don't think they use the 2 piece plugs...still have heard plenty about seized plugs, stripped threads, etc. even on the 2 valves...still not looking forward to it...
We have run into a lot of coil problems on the 5.4s I normally just buy a 8 pack of them. We have one that is pushing 500k. Forgot to add that they also idle 3-4 hours a day. Gary
That’s what I went with an 8pack of the mad blaster coils. I’m sure they aren’t the best, but the price was right and I figured if one or two were going that the rest would be close behind might as well change them all!
My big trouble is, aside from all the stupid problems they have I’m a sucker for a Super Duty! Not sure if the newer years have bad troubles as well.
