Last night I loaded up my Jotul F500 shut the air down and went to bed.

1 hour later and we could both smell it getting hot.

The stove looked like it was open not closed and the ICC chimney was getting hot.

We could see an orange glow occasionally from the top of the chimney. It's only 1o feet high about.

I am very confident it was NOT a chimney fire, .can the flames from the firebox go up the chimney in a jotul.

I've been to hundreds of chimney fires so am familiar with creosote and all that. But this is my first year burning wood. My stove pipe is spotless looking up through. With no signs of creosote.

Also I bought a Rutland burn indicator.

I have double walled pipe so it says to place it on the stove top. Is this sufficient? 15179423551261956711796715028708.jpg

My digital thermometer reads 400 on the same spot

What's the chance of a gasket issue? Air leaking in from somewhere?

Placement of thermometer on stove top is good. If you want one for the flue you'll need a probe.

I doubt flames would go up the chimney just from the stove so no doubt you had something in there and the fire cleaned it out. But for sure I'd be checking for any leaks, especially if you have an ash pan as draft from underneath can really get things going strong.

Thanks all. I cleaned it real good today there was some ash in the gasket areas. Also the air control lever was sticking.

Ordered a new one if those.
