So Im getting married in November....and I have seen tons and tons and tons of wood piles( in perfectly cut rounds) around my town lately for people to take. Im thinking about going around every so often, and start to sell firewood for a couple of extra bucks. Gather a ton of wood anytime I see it, take it home, split it and stack it on a pallet 4x4x4........What do you think a pallet of split (not seasoned, cause it will just be split) 4x4x4 wood would cost to sell to people? Does this sound dumb? Or a good idea? I already have 15+ pallets of wood for myself and my home, so I'm not going to be using or taking from my hard earned seasoned wood lol.
Depends on the locale. If'n I was of the mind to do that, I'd call around other firewood supplies to see what they charge. The market will dictate the price.
Ya I see stacks of firewood that are like 1 foot by 1 foot wide and like 2-3 feet high, their very tiny and they go for like $15-20 for a tiny little stack. Im thinking maybe $100 for a 4x4x4 stacked pallet.
4x4x4 sounds like half a cord to me. Price what a cord of wood is in your area and sell it for half or maybe a little less because it is not seasoned wood.
I'm practically your neighbor. $100 for a 1/2 cord is fair for seasoned wood around Bucks country. You can get a little more if you have some clientele in or around Doylestown. Are you going to deliver? You'll have a lot more interest if you are willing to deliver and stack on-site. Also, if you start and provide a good product people will come back to you. If you miss a year, you might lose those customers for good. Keep track of the dollars in and dollars out. Good luck!
I always stack my wood on pallets - 40"x48" and 4.5' high with cribbed corners (lowers the number of splits in the stack, so I take that into account). I suggest NOT selling as fraction of a cord - if it isn't stacked in a way you can calculate the fraction, you'll have people either get more than they paid for, or worse....less. I'm honest with customers - explain what they are buying and give a per pallet price. I sell a pallet here for $125. I only sell what I have over that I want to keep for personal use - which is about 55-60 pallets or about 6-7 years of personal wood. Last fall that meant selling 10 pallets. They sell instantly when I offer them - the price is pretty good for the area, but the wood is premium - 3 years in the stack and a good mix of oak/ash/red maple typically. Most customers had no idea what burning dry wood was really like until they bought my wood - now they place their orders a year in advance to be sure to get some. I really don't like selling the wood - I try not to think about what it would be in a $/hour scenario - but I use the money to fund new tools I want, etc. - and that is always fun. Best of luck! Cheers!
That used to be my policy, until I realized people were willing to pay for stacking. What you have to look out for is....where do they want it stacked? Up the porch, across the porch, down the stairs, through the gate, around the house, down the stairs, across the basement, through the tunnel, into my doomsday cave, 3-4 sticks at a time, etc....NO NO NO, not today!!!! Ideally, I can pull the trailer next to where they want it stacked. We don't get near the prices you northerners get for firewood so every $$$ counts.
Down the street they have a cord for $300 delivered. Everytime I see that sign I realize how much money I have piled up in the yard.
wow thanks hoarders, I can always depend on you guys. Im shocked I haven't seen @grizzlyadams chime in yet lol. I got a lot to think about lol.
Around here the average seems to be around $100 a seasoned face cord. Most of the stuff is sold as a face here too, you say full cord and have to explain yourself. 18-20 face cord log loads average around $1000 so that means roughly $52 a face cord just in log form not counting your time and equipment. Your talking of putting up a half full cord stack so your at roughly $78 in just wood plus your time and such. So $100 doesn’t sound to bad! So if you are not having to buy the wood to start, more for your saw fund!!!
I'd like to sell 4x4x4 with cribbed corners as a half a cord for a $100. Stacking half a cord on a 40x48 pallet gets pretty tall.
A guy near me has those IBC Totes (Or whatever they are called) with just the metal cages. He fills them or $75.
It's been a few years now since I sold any firewood and I don't miss it either. $100 sounds like a decent price.
Around here (northern) a face cord starts at $65-$75. This is typically mixed hardwood. Other species like oak go for a bit more per face cord. Lots of places sell "seasoned" firewood, but not one of them is seasoned enough for epa stoves. Seasoned means processed in spring early summer and dumped in a pyramid shaped pile (wood processors), the sold in fall with the mad rush for winter.
