There are 2 problems with a splitter that is fast. The first is keep wood to it. The other is getting the splits away from it.
I shouldn't dish the new saw. And I hope I've not offended the OP. It will probably work well. But as with most new Stihl models. It will probably have a bug or 2. Most do. Including the 046 Mag when it first came out. And it will probably pull a 28" bar fine. For me a 28" bar is just a couple inches short. And I have plum wore out several 28" bars. The 30" is where the 460 is just Purrfect!! A 6 horse power head With a 20" bar doesn't make much sense to me
Yeppers ... definitely a “sweet spot” regarding the diameter of the round ... I “wood” take 8-10” 1 pulls all day over 24” ... I did fab up a hoist for Biguns though ... that’s the only downfall of the my style kinetic ... YOU are the log lift ! This is worth its weight in gold imho !
Comparing two ported 90cc Stihls in different size and species wood, one with the bar buried in 15" of rock hard oak and a backyard hack port job sporting a work chain and one with a half sized softwood stick and a John Reilley port job sporting his obviousely worked chain ??? Appreciate the huge compliment !
Yup ... me too ... unless it’s sporting the high - output Oiler option (which is not stated by the op ) it’s not going to work very long !!!
I tried it with 390, 395, 660, and 661. All of them pull it fine if you can clear the chips or noodles. 661 feels like it may break the spring mounts when you do it. 394 felt the best with it.
Had a 42” on a wicked-work saw 395xp ... pulled and oiled fine ... on the 660 it pulled but seems like bar oil was inadequate ... 660 is stock - NO high-output Oiler installed
I modded the oiler on 660s to use over 36". 661 with the pin pushed in does better than a 660 but still not a 395 or 9010 in oiling.
I had the oil discussion with my dealer a while back. According to Stihl they designed their bars and chain to run on less oil. He pointed out the difference in design. For chain he pointed out the oil grove that feeds each rivit and also oils the sprocket in the bar tip. Stihl believes that because they oil the wear parts they can run less oil. Also stated that the dealers need to explain to coustomers that the new stihl chain, bars, saws will use less oil than what we are use to seeing. The industry is getting pressure to make sure that they aren’t damaging the environment with bar oil, emissions etc...He had just came back from a month course at Stihl Virginia Beach. I have no dog in the how much oil is oiling fight. I like to see a little oil thrown when I goose the trigger. I have noticed that with the stihl brand chain I see less oil on the wood than with 72cl with no Oiler adjustments. I am talking about the end of a fresh cut when the bar tip is 3-5 inches away.
I upgraded the oiler on the 660 I had. I don't care what Stihl says it wouldn't oil a 32" b&c in dead dry wood without the HO oiler. My 395 puts out more oil than than my 084 did.
You can buy the log lifter for from split second for your splitter. It also comes with the stabilzers which will get rid of the supersplit wobble.
