Ashwatcher, the only bad thing about our Lilly was her shedding. She shed hair 365 days a year 24 hours a day! You pet her and you had a handful of hair. We tried so many ideas. Do your do that also?
They do shed, seems to me sometimes more than at other times-My other dog, the rescue has longer hair and sheds constantly-the vet last week suggested giving them fish oil but havent researched it out yet-The shedding is a nuisance but worth it for the love...Take care my friend
Thank you for sharing pictures of Savvy, she's a beautiful girl. Dogs are special in so many ways; their loyalty, positivity, ability to forgive, and unconditional love are traits we should all try to emulate. Many of us have been in your shoes while watching our furry family members decline. It's not easy but something we must go through and I'm certain you will spoil her as much as you can.
It's like they say, lock your dog and your wife in the trunk for a half hour, see which one is happy to see you when you let them out!!!
Thought you were talking about marriage there for a second! Just kidding . Ha! No, don’t let my wife see this...
I always like looking at your set up Ashwatcher . And as you know, I think you have a great choice of splitter. Sorry to hear about Savvy, I had to put my Sadie down at 14 years, I bawled my eyes out bringing her to vets for that sad task. It's great hearing from you, go slow with that shoulder.
Thank you all, this is a great place to be for support among friends. NH mountain man I too have made that trek more times than I care to recall but it is our duty and burden to hold them as sweet peace takes them. I'm off work right now but I will share with you and all a piece that has been dear to me for a long time in the near future as it is in a frame in my office but cant locate a copy here at home. It's entitled "A Dogs Prayer" and of all wonderful things I have read over my years, it captures all that is sacred to me as a pet lover. It is an honor to belong here with so many like minds and kind souls. I hope this finds all warm and well.
Sir Backwoods Savage for clarification I am starting on my 4th cord so I'm just slightly beyond, by 1/2 a cord what I normally burn a season. The remaining weather of course will dictate how much I exceed the average. The rodent to my north said 6 more weeks so time will tell. Hope this finds you warm and well.
I figured we'd probably be around 4 cord this winter with all the cold we've had and are having. But maybe we'll be 3 to 3 1/2. Not bad.
Yep, Calendar always says 6 more weeks of winter, irregardless of rodent fortune telling. Sorry to hear about Savvy being on the short end, Jill and I are on our 3rd dog (Cinder and Linux overlapped together) in the nearly 20 years we've known each other and been together. After my Linux had to be put down, it took us/me years to get past it enough to start looking for another. It was then that we were graced with the arrival of Holly our rescue dog. She was unfortunately abused by some jacka$$ of a "man" so she didn't take to me at first. Now I can barely leave the house without her. I always felt that the right dog comes along at exactly the right moment. I'm not as keen on the seemingly non-stop movement of wood from one place to another through the year, the only time I'm keen on it is from the porch to the house to the stove. We also have a cart for the 4-wheeler as I used to drag logs/tops down off the hill directly, then the 4wh transmission started to complain with odd squeaks and squeals. I figure $300 for a tow cart is WAY better than $8k for a new 4wh. Chaz
Same here Chaz - my rescue was left behind by a pill head in the dead of winter...Speck claimed a laundry basket in my garage, where I do have a gas ventless wall heater---it lasted about a week and he had his own bed in front of the fire...the puke just moved off and left him...he now has a home and is so good to Savvy...I had him neutered last week,,,not the best for him but hope it cures his hobo ways...he's a very loving and grateful pet...I'm more grateful for him...
So funny but yet sad...I'd give him treats and if fed, he'd stash them for later, still thinking he might not know from where his next meal would come...he was a fend for himself, eat where you can kinda dog...I've kinda spoiled that out of him now...Cheezits are his fave...Savvy the lady always gets treated first, except for Cheezits...those are Speck's fave...He even waits for lap time after the lady...I say Savvy first, he lays patiently on the floor til she's done-you are right Chaz , they appear at the right time...
It is good when the younger has the elder to teach it some ways. Unfortunately with animals as with humans that is not always the case. When I met Jill she had Cinder, an SPCA dog that was black lab/greyhound mix. After a few years together my nephew brought home a pup that "wouldn't be very big" I looked at her and her silver dollar sized paws and said "Yeah right". My BIL and sister had my other nephew who was 1 yr old at the time, and Linux (formerly Brittany) was a bit of a biter. She loved to fight play and did leave scratches with sharp puppy teeth. My BIL said that she was going to the SPCA, I looked at Jill and asked "what do you think". The answer was a resounding no, our local SPCA has some issues I'm afraid. But that had nothing to do with the decision, I fell in love with the pup at first site. She was a Rottweiler/Chow mix with some extra spices thrown in for good measure. An All American mutt much like myself. She was my/our companion for 14 yrs. She had calcification on her spine and when we'd take her to the vet (another long story there) the vet was always amazed that she was still walking and playful. The day that I sat with her last she still had small burdocks in her fur from our last outing with the 4wh. We had a late spring blast of winter, and she slipped on ice and it messed her back up bad, she could barely walk if helped to her feet and couldn't squat to do business without falling down completely. The vet said we could put her on a higher regime of pain pills, but we knew from previous experience that she would just be 'zombified' if we went that route. It wasn't fair to her to put her through that, so I made the decision. Out of all the dogs I've known in my life, I honestly have to say that her loss hurt me the most. I just cannot fathom how some people can be so F$$%%ed up as to take their aggression's out on a nearly defenseless animal. But then again, there seems to be more and more every day that I just do not understand. Brave new world????? Wow, this went downward quick, I'm still gonna post it though. Chaz
You're a good one Chaz , personally I'm glad you're here...and it's a pleasure to know you . Anyone who defends the defenseless is alright with me...just like Speck claiming the laundry basket...he was doing what he needed to survive, he found a loving home, I found a new friend who depends on me. We have each other's back...just let a strange vehicle come down the driveway and I know...Speck's on guard...Later pal
edit.. Ash, thank you very much, I am very pleased to be here and to get to know you all also. I knew there was a reason that this site stuck out first and foremost in my mind when I had questions. Not the best pic of her, but here is Linux. Ya wanna talk about shedding. This dog would stand up and there'd be clumps of fur on the carpet. Even with "semi-regular" brushings. Most of our pics reside on different hard drives throughout the years, some working, some not. Ya'd think that an IT guy would do more regular backups of data. Kinda like the car mechanic that has 2 non-functional vehicles at home. Chaz
