About to head down there and see what I can pull out before dark. Got a feeling the poison ivy vines are going to come back to haunt me down there. Picked up an old Plumb hatchet this morning that was in really rough shape that I have got to hang once the local hardware store opens and I can get a handle. Took me a minute to get all the epoxy out of the top of it and resharpen it. Just one more to add to the collection. Had to go really slow burning out so I wouldn't change the temper in the steel. Second load was a good bit of white oak. Tried to get all the splits but still got some left to get before I get all the rounds. Got a few rounds that were around the trailer though. Pulled the first of the 3 tarps out also. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Hopefully after the rain tomorrow I'll have some time this coming week to get the rest out of there. It was a hair bit muddy along the sewer line today so I know it will be after the incoming rain tomorrow. Ended up raining most of all day today so I did some saw maintenance, chain grinding, and some cleaning up around the shop. Also got some wood stacked on the breezeway beside the back door to get ready for maybe one or two more cold snaps. Hung a hatchet head that I worked on restoring a few days ago. I'll get some pics below of the finished product after a couple coats of boiled linseed oil. Got the rest of the white oak I had on hand that didn't get washed in the woods split up this evening. Stacked it up and left it uncovered to hopefully dry out. My access is 32" from the top the head to the bottom of the handle. Kind of give you some size reference. The stack is 5 rows wide. Got my father to come down and hang out for a while this evening. Was really nice getting to spend some time with him on the wood lot. He had the idea of taking a stainless steel washing machine tub and turning it into a fire pit. Great idea and it helps to burn scraps around the splitter. Plus the radiant heat keeps you right warm. That was great you were able to recover the splits, rounds and tarps. How far back did it set you in drying time for the wood?
MikeyB it sure is nice on windy blustery days to have something throwing off a little heat for you. Once the fingers start to turn colors it sure doesn't take long to get them warmed up and the wet gloves from the wood dried out. Woodwidow it set the drying process back further than when I first got the wood. It is soaking wet. I can see water coming out of the grain when I set an axe in the end of it. milleo lol that washer had a bad day. Do I see a hose blowing air in from the bottom to keep is stoking right along? I hope it's not a shop vac hose. Maybe an old drain hose This evening I split up the whole trailer load I had recovered the other day. Turned out to be a pretty decent bit of wood. I didn't grab a pic of the pieces that were all ready split up but I got them in a different pile since they are a little more dry than what the rounds were. Here is the finished product after the first coat of linseed oil. Got the 3rd coat soaking in by the fire right now while I'm sitting in the recliner. Got 2 more coats to go before I let it sit for 48hrs. HolsatiaRedneck I sure appreciate it. I like the stand you made for yours. It's surprising how much heat they throw off for what they are. I was really glad to find the wood also. Got a good bit accomplished yesterday on what I believe to be some mulberry. Was about 21-22" at the base and it seemed to produce quite a bit of wood not too much smalls, uglies, or crotches to have to deal with. Also picked myself up a much needed XA22 hookeroon. Also I'm sure someone here has more knowledge on the value of misery whips than I do. I found these at a local flea market on Sunday. The first the guy wants $50 for since it has a chunk missing out of the spine. The second one next to the the yellow life jacket he wants $60 for. Do y'all think either are a good deal for the price?
