Thinking about getting one but unsure which one or even should we get one.

How do you get the books onto one?

Do you have WiFi in your house? If you don't, you can't get books onto a Kindle. If you have a smartphone, there is a Kindle app, and you can download books on to your phone via your cell connection.

You can transfer them via USB using Calibre.

I bought a Fire HD6 for lil one a year or so Dennis, and it now sits unused. I could send it to you if you are interested. We pay through the nose for satellite internet so it did not work out for us. Lemme scare it up and let you know which kind it is. You are on the edge of DSL range, right?

My father is a RAVENOUS reader, not sure which Kindle he has but he really likes it, cheaper than books and he can enlarge the text for his eyes.

That being said, I have ordered free Kindle books from my Amazon Prime membership and downloaded and read them on on my PC......

    Kindle fire hd8 user here.

If you have Wi-Fi, you'll have no trouble using it. It's user friendly.

I have a Kindle Fire HD8. I used it for a year like a laptop.
Got the bluetooth keybrd w/it. It worked great.
I use it in my basement shop and garage for music. I have Amazon
Prime. Access to more music than I can listen to in the rest of my life...
and it gets better all the time. They have play lists and "stations" you can
listen to. These are collections of one type of music. Pick what you like.
I use the bluetooth to link it to a Sony SRS X7 speaker. It puts out better sound
than the giant sperkers I had in college. It's all so small I can just carry it
back and forth. It does a lot more than load books. Good luck!

...oh...I also got a set of J Bird Bluetooth ear buds. Down load the music from Amazon
and take it on the plane w/me for my own music.

    Same here.
Bought one for each of the 2 youngest Gkids, then decided wife and I both "needed" one too.
I don't like using the internet on it, but it is usable for that.

This is intriguing. I've been trying to find a good solution for music in the shop.

Don't have WiFi but can't I use it like the laptop? I have DSL so have a modem and can easily use the laptop like WiFi.

you SHOULD be able to get a free modem that has WiFi abilities built into it from your service provider...

Maybe the modem that you have now has WiFi but you have not yet enabled it?

Have 2 Kindles between wife and I. A Paperwhite and a previous model that the name escapes me. Also have an Asus tablet with the kindle app.
Prefer the actual kindles as they have matte finished screens which makes it easier to read in bright light. (Think summer day lounging on hammock with favorite drink under an umbrella, waiting for your long smoke to finish (pastrami, brisket, pork shoulder, ...)
The tablet with its shiney screen is difficult to read in bright light.
All ours are wifi-only, thothere are models that use data plan from your cell co (if u have or want one).
