Boy you just gotta love the swings. Especially living by the ocean. The past three days the radio has been talking about the black ice wreaking havoc on the daily commute. Now today and tomorrow we are hitting 50 and mid 40's respectively. This coming week is going to be mild as well.

I hate these types of weeks because I will have to rely more on oil. Which I am very low on, and not in a position to fill the tank. Guess I'll be going to the gas station a couple times this week to get 10 gallons of diesel to put in the oil tank to get by until payday on Friday. Trust me life could be far worse. Thankfully I'll have the money on Friday.

It's either than or run the wood stove and heat us out of the living room.

On the plus side, our bedroom will not need the electric heaters going non-stop. That will be a nice savings on the electric bill.

You gotta love the temp swings, in the 40's last couple of days so over heating the house is real easy now but snow storm coming tomorrow and temps back to "normal" next week. it's been a nice break from the below zero crap.

Right where I want to be.
I've been taking normal sized splits of Ash and splitting them down into much smaller pieces, then using those mini splits to make a nice small fire just to take the chill out.
Works well until the overnight fire, and uses much less firewood. Also started clearing out the cutoffs from the shop to make fires.
I hear ya' on the temps. This is our "ice season".....as in, everything melts, then freezes......over and over. :headbang:
Wife has been watching TV (Roku) in the bedroom lately (no heat back there) and turning on a little space heater. She doesn't run it much so the bill hasn't been bad......yet.
70IAT this am, and a slight chill in the air, so I added one small split to the coals and the temp went to 73......I'm sitting here sweating a little. I think the OAT is about 35 or so, headed to 40-41.
Can you do a partial fill on the oil?

A second for the small fire... I have bags of small sticks cut on the mitre saw that I use for days like this... just stuff the whole bag in, light it off and let it burn out in an hour or so.. brings the temp up to a comfortable level... I’d rather run the wood stove with the windows open than needlessly burn the precious heating oil.

Yup - smaller fires here. Also, gives us the chance to open a couple of windows in the back of the house. We find it good to be able to change out the air now and then, this time of year, especially.

    GO PATS!!

Quick hot fires and let it go out for the most part works great, you learn how to do it when the wood stove is the only source of heat for 40 years, and I do think I am a little nuts for doing it this long.:headbang:

A quick short fire in the morning and let it go out, then a burn around suppertime, maybe reload with some oak.
I wish I had more pine. Split and ready to go. Might burn hot but not for long.

Well, after years and years of being the "patsies", and understanding that it can't last forever, it's like hoarding - can't ever have enough, so ya grab while the grabbin' is good.!

This is where I miss the soap stone. You could get that warm, and let that radiate for a couple of hours. Without over heating. The steel is not the same when it comes to shoulder season.

If I got "too far" away from an ocean I might go a little silly! I have to see it at least a couple times a year and I have to admit Warren, I "CAN"T" live without Lobsta..... or Crabs or Scallops or Shrimp, or Clams, or Flounder or........

WeldrDave Just giving you a hard time. I am sure the sea food enjoyed out east is way better than the same product brought to flyover country
