you've got (or had ) one of the powder post beetle grubs in that pine split too the little ballpoint size holes that pine was cut dead standing or sat in rounds or logs for a while ? outer 1/3 of the split looks a little soft /wet from sitting unsplit for a while too
Once you've tried em', ya just can't stop eatin em… you better cut wood on a full stomach, if yer gonna git anything done…
The effort required to prevent these little monsters by peeling the bark most likely exceeds the wood savings that result. It's like the "angel's share" when making whisky, just the cost of doing business. Split and stack your wood as quickly as possible to minimize their window of opportunity. Move on.
Are those the things that sometimes leave a pile of super fine "sawdust" laying around the wood? I had a stack last year that was filled with little piles of super fine dust around some of the splits, but I could not find any holes or spots that it looked like it came from... was weird. All gone now, burnt, but was wondering what that was.....
Nope Marchia those are powder post beetles your talking about. Those things will get in your house furniture and trim!! The larvae things won't. Bee careful with PP!!!
Not really sure to be honest. Id have to google it. But a guess on my part would be close to or smaller than a grain of rice??
