What is this? Got a truck load of it today from an excavation site. It's heavy, but seems dry, and is very hard, but cuts fairly easy. Haven't split any yet. Clear yellowish wood with very little variations in grain, with a thin bark.

I don't ever recall seeing this before. It's not pine, maple, Red oak or Black locust, that's about all I know!

    Thanks

Ash comes to mind but I'm not sure ash would be described as heavy compared to other green species

Does it have a lemony or root-beerish scent to it? Sure looks a lot like sassafras to me.....

When will there be a phone app. that will tell what species a tree is just by taking a picture of it? :D
But, then we wouldn't have these great id threads:(

It does it super quick from what I understand as well ! I bet there is something out there . But.........that does take some of the fun away !!

If you've got a leaf, the app already exists: Leafsnap.

I've seen that one before......I'd like an app that can do the same thing with a detailed picture of bark. ....

Thanks for that link though, it's one worth having for sure!

Yeah, bark is a lot trickier.

This particular wood does look a lot like sassafras, but sassafras isn't hard and heavy when dry...

I'd almost lay the bank on sassy......I'm betting it's fresh - cut (I can't see any checking on the ends), I hope he gives it the "split and sniff" test and lets us know......;)

The app requires LEAVES to work. No bark app, yet anyway.

It is "hard", but as I said it was EASY to cut with the chainsaw. So it feels hard to the hand if you knock on it, unlike a soft deadening type wood, but it did cut like a soft wood, saw went right thru it. I did not notice a smell at all when cutting, and I have yet to split any. I'll try to split some and sniff and let you know. I just have to make sure my wife does not find me in the back yard, which is now completely FULL of 6' rounds stacked about 5' deep, sniffing the wood!! She already thinks (and I'm beginning to believe her!) I'm nuts with this wood problem, and now she will find me lurking and sniffing around the fresh wood pile. This could get problematic, YIKES!!!

    x2!

I thought this wouldn't be an issue for me as my processing area is a bit from the house. Just yesterday late afternoon i was out splitting and my wife knows I can't always hear my cell phone if she sends a text. Just as I split a piece of walnut and brought a piece up to my nose to smell the fresh split, I looked up and there she was looking across the yard. She came out to ask a question. She hasn't asked about the wood sniffing - yet.

I agree with Scotty here as it looks like sassafras. It should smell great to everyone!

I heard my wife tell someone that she thought my firewood hoarding was a mid-life crisis, I told her at least it wasn't a mistress or some other hobby that costs money. Yes she has caught me sniffing a fresh split, and asked me what the he!! I was doing, she got over it.

    LOL!

Ok, so I snuck out back in my work clothes when I got home tonight, and sniffed the ends of a few of the freshly bucked pieces. Sure enough, it smells lemony! Almost like a lemon chemical cleaner, pleasant smell. Interesting I didn't notice that when cutting it, too busy cutting I guess. So I'm pretty sure it is Sassafras, thanks guys. And PS, isn't Ecstasy (the drug) made from the Sassafras tree? I think I remember seeing that on TV somewhere...?

Anyway, I then look up and my next door neighbor is looking out his window directly at me, with a really big smirk on his face!! I wave, and he slowly waves back, and NO KIDDING (can't make this stuff up!), he gives ME the head shake!! LOL!

Ok, started a new thread, what is this one???
