So today i cut down a poplar tree that was standing dead. Put it on the mill and made myself some homemade pallets to stack my wood on. Its just to get my wood up off the ground. Knocked out 70 ft worth today. They are 20" wide (width of my firewood) x 10 ' long. Pics of the tractor starting at -5F and the final product ( they are sitting on my picnic table).

How well does poplar hold up to moisture, being on the ground? How long do you expect them to last?

Good questions! I would guess they will last 3 years if i am lucky. Probably have to replace the two lower runners by then i think.

3 years not to bad, maybe more if not in the dirt, sit on crushed rock or something.
Looks great, nice to see when someone takes an inch a pride in something now days!

Definitely nice to see and while its sacrificial, it’s a clean and level looking pallet. Well done Spencer. You’re likely to get some of these guys asking for the build pictures.

I should have taken more pictures of cutting boards on the sawmill and the general layout. It always seems once i get started on a project, i forget to take pictures.

If you have some old bricks or blocks laying around (I keep a supply), and place them under the pallets, they'll last longer. Nice pics of a fun day in the woods, with a tractor to boot!

I second what NH mountain man said. I always try and stack on bricks to elevate the pallets off the ground.

Great idea NH mountain man. My dad has some bricks to spare at his house that we used to extend his driveway a long time ago, we can use those.

That is a pretty cool idea you came up with and you cut all the lumber your self.

The tree we cut down had alot of pithy sapwood, but the heart wood was in good shape. Perfect for a project like this as you can zip most of the sapwood off in just a few minutes with the sawmill.

You could nail some stripes of roofingfelt (i hope googled the right name) under it in addition to the bricks, pallets are looking good though and zhe wee traktor ...
