After the charity cut was over this afternoon I got a trailer load of pallets and 2x4s to make more pallet racks. Getting to the point I don't need too many more as I am also re-using the ones I emptied this year. But built 3 more to stack another cord of the locust I have split, then filled them. Dang it's been a long but productive day. Had to use the hand truck to take the empty racks down to the splitting area, yard is too wet for the tractor. And Pete no you cannot have my trailer full of pallets and 2x4s!
It's great for moving firewood, really cuts down on handling wood a lot. Stack it on those racks and I can just move it with the tractor as needed until I move it up to the house to burn
Think about how many times we handle the firewood..from start ..to throwing it into the stove . This saves a huge step...and leaves more energy for other things ! Great idea
4'x4' so each one with two rows is a rick or face cord. They hold up well. I broke two this year trying to let them out of frozen ground. I will be putting runners under them now.
Thanks for posting this Swags - very timely for me as i had two stacked face cords fall over in the last two weeks and i have another thats leaning real bad. The video was super helpful to see how you make these. I'll get some good solid pallets from work and will give this a try. I'll have to keep an eye out for a set of forks for my tractor.
Swags, great idea. Why don't you put the uprights on the other sides of the pallets? I see you nail a "nailing board" across the top to then nail the upright into. Why not just nail them into the side of the pallet that has the base wood? (hard to explain properly but I think you get what I mean....)
I think I see why, cause then you would block the holes used to put the hi/lo lift under it to move it.
You got it can't get the forks in that way. I could maybe get it done and get the forks in there but the pallets are longer then wide so I would get less wood per pallet unless I did three rows. And from trial and error I leaned with some heavy wood like oak the tractor won't keep it very level as the weight leans it back. I had picked up a skid from the side cause I couldn't get it from the front and ended up dumping half the pallet. So this way if the pallet leans it's just into the upright that is there. In the attached pic you can see the first version I had made with three pallets. They work great but I didn't like the look of them as much, and I think my current method leaves more air space.
