We've piled wood on the stove many times when I was a kid. If it started to smoke we'd turn it over and wait for the other side to smoke. My dad was a steam/ boiler engineer not much phased him. Never did that unattended of course !!

Glad to see good advice in this thread about keeping the flue temps up using marginal wood (or good wood for that matter), that point seems to get lost in the mix sometimes.

I used this stuff last year when we were in a similar situation. Worked very well and sweeping much effective. It’s a lot more economical than logs and from the research I did it works a lot better. I think I added it every 2-4 days.

Same stuff I use, Menard's has it local. I don't know if it works or not but..... I had some health issues and I (embarrassed to say) went both winter of 2014/15 AND 15/16 WITHOUT cleaning anything. Last fall we cleaned the $#&@ out of it and I had less than a 1/2 gallon of grey ash. This on a Nashua with 25' of 8" flue. Plus the flue is still the original from the late 70's. Full time burning only (used) source of heat. Maybe it's working or maybe ........

Hey Midwinter, just order two 2-pounders on eBay for $28.60 (free shipping.) Is that a decent price?

Also, how many scoops do you get from a pound? TIA....

That's a really good deal if you are getting 4 pounds for $28.60. Two pounds is $17.74 on Amazon. The scoop that comes with it is about the size of a coffee scoop. One two pound container lasts almost a whole winter for me. I use one scoop on most days (I forget sometimes).

No, seriously. (I doubt there's a convention anywhere to bring beer to.)

The trophy points are very useful.

Lots of members use them in lieu of paying their annual membership fees; others for free shipping of any given number of internet sites.

When you hit the platinum level of trophy points (years away, but worth it) You will be in a bundled package of perks including all but not limited to the following....

    No membership fees.
Free shipping from associated internet sites.
No more parking lot fees at FHC headquarters.
Front row parking at FHC headquarters and all FHC events.
30% complimentary discount at participating Sthil and Husqvarna dealers.
One time annual use of corporate transportation (including FHC jet; flight team provided).
First in line benefits at all FHC GTG
Unlimited drinks at all FHC events. No charges and driver provided.

Unfortunately, the 45% petroleum products discount has been discontinued for new members. It seems that it was being abused and newer members were giving up hoarding firewood and instead using the 45% discount to pay monthly heating bills.

Once you receive your membership card, a more complete and currently updated list should be included which will be easily referenced by swiping card on your home computer.

I always found burning not ready for prime time wood, like using the teaspoon ocean thing. i'd shift to bricks, mix or alone. probably cheaper in the long run than wasting what will be good wood down the road.
