    Hi all,

I got a new Stihl MS250 so supplement my Craftsman starter saw. The Stihl is extremely hard to start, physically speaking. What I mean is that the pull to start is harder to turn than any pull to start 2 stroke I have ever experienced.

I pulled the spark plug and dry motored it and seemed to help a little. It is new so I am abiding by the break in time recommended in the book before running it full and hard. Does it just need some break in time?

Any ideas on why it is so difficult to get it to turn over when starting? Is this normal?

    Kevin,

The saw should start fairly easy. Of course easy to me might be different for you. Difficult to pull over doesn't sound normal to me. With it being a new saw I'm sure it would be covered by the warranty. I'd let the dealer worry about making it right.

That little saw should not pull too hard, unless it has been sitting out in subzero weather. How hard does it pull over once warm? I would run a few tanks through it, and run it hard and see what happens. My 880 will rip fingers off when I start it in sub zero temps, but is fine above 30.

Kevin, I just picked up a new Stihl MS 250 last Tuesday, they started it up for me before I paid for it and I was just out in my backyard to give it a go and it started up pretty smooth for me. I would bring it back to the dealer like BarcroftB mentioned.

Hello, all. Thanks for the input, I'll bring it by the dealer this week. Sounds like a possible issue. It has been cold here, but it sits in the cellar which is above freezing.

    Thank you.

One of the things I like about James River Equipment where I buy Stihl equipment is they gas it up,start it and make sure it's right before it leaves their store.

They did a test run there for me but it was very brief, and they started it...so I was not able to get the feel for it.

That’s the nice part of going to a real dealer. There are a lot of stores selling the small saws, but have limited to no knowledge on the saw, the way it runs, or the chain. I know it sounds rude, but I ask the sales person if they carry square ground or rsl chain or if they know what an 066 is compared to MS660. Obvious answers to us, but I need to know who I am talking to otherwise I get wrong chains/parts when I order. Good luck!
