6F here this morning. Stove did not carry the house overnight and the kitchen toe- kick heater was running. Then the bad news: the water meter in the cellar froze; my wife got about a cup of water than nothing..... :-( So I put two 300 watt works lights on the meter area and went to work with a torch on the surrounding pipes with a faucet open and Viola! Flowing water, just like they had 2,000 years ago in Rome. Still have the work lights on and aimed at the water meter but will try and buy some heat tape later today, if Home- Lowes has any left. Time to wrap that thing and plug it in. Stove is loaded and kicked in the pants now though; stove top temp. approaching 600F where I will hold it for a while until the house recovers. Brian
Yeah I saw in the National weather that the mid US and Eastern states are in for a blast of cold stretching past Texas and Florida. Extremes!
Gotta love them crazies who love their oil or electric heat but never set themselves up for real good heat.
Sitting at -17 right now. Something must be wrong......When I fired up the OWB earlier, I thought to myself it doesn't feel all that cold this morning hmm! Radio is screaming for 15" overnight. Fun.
Well it's warmed up now only 12 below.. Burlington only got to minus 8. Apparently some are annoyed as the record is 22 below and we are not even close. STT back to 600 and its snowing! Burning ash elm and cherry this beautiful morning!
So now that two 300 watt halogen work lights have been pointed at the water meter for a few hours, I checked the temperature and.... it dropped by 5 degrees. WTF? Went rooting around and found the real problem; when the electricians installed the new electrical service, they removed the insulation and backer board from the top of the foundation wall so there was a 6 inch gap with nothing but a piece of trim board between that area and outside. The cold air is literally blowing straight down the cellar wall and directly onto the water meter which is in the corner. So I stuffed the entire sill area with 10" of rockwool insulation and I could feel the cold 'going away' as I was doing it. Inside of every large problem, there is a smaller problem struggling to get out. -Unknown but a wise man in my experience. No problem though 'cause the temp. has rocketed to 10F here and will hold here for a few hours until it starts to drop again. Brian
I just came home after a trip to visit a customer. As I pull up to the house I see smoke coming out of he chimney. Apparently, in my rush to get out this morning I shut the air too far too soon and the stove was just smoldering with a 250 stt and a stalled cat. It was down to a rather frosty 70f in the house! Opened the air and the door and a few puffs of air had the box full of locust take right off.
I have a fan set up like that and it works great but my house has a strange closed floor plan and the laundry room has 3 outside walls . I only use the e heater when it's zero or below for those pipes , zero and below usually doesn't happen that often here
Na, we are warmer than normal, but do to our location, yes we are on the other side of Michigan from your area.
About an hour South of me it got pretty cold last night as well. New record low temperature set for Watertown; cold weather expected to remain for at least a week
That's it...I'm moving to death valley or Arizona. Or some place warm with a bbq food culture. That's -32 c feels -46 c
Coulda sworn trim board was the same as 10'' insulation????? Good ya found it BDF and make sure ya send them the bill.
