I agree with this. It will be much harder to get a high surface temp outside of it is cold and windy. If you are pushing out that many BTU’s, the inside of the stove will be much hotter and I don’t think it is worth it to avoid a very small amount of smoke from what is left in the paint.
Hi woody5506. No, we only set it out once before and then we had a bunch of rain and couldn't do any more. It's been in the house and we only rolled it out again to try to burn it hotter. The chimney isn't installed yet, lack of time and rain. So i thought i may as well get as much stink off as i can. Got it up to 500 last night and it burned really nice. I just emptied it and let the coals and ash die outside. Once it's cold we'll roll it in for good. Learned a lot though by burning it. Like putting bigger pieces at the side walls after starting out fresh without coal bed doesn't work, they won't burn much and were still there under the coals this morning. On the whole i think we are starting a love affair here, can't wait to get it installed.I can't figure out how to upload a video, mine are mp4.
Yep, you want to put the biggest pieces in the middle. Videos, you have to upload them to your YouTube account and then link them here
Fair enough! I was gonna say that's a pretty pricey outdoor fire pit ya got! As others have already mentioned, you should expect the stove to run much better/easier once it's set up. Even putting bigger pieces at the side walls could have much better results once it's running as designed.
Consider this thread…revived. New QF Expedition 1 insert. AM, day 2 (yesterday - our first morning fire using coals from the night before). Tossed a fresh, knotty pin oak ugly in there just before the pics. It’s official - we’re in love with our new heat source.
Thank you. Research - a lot on this forum - brought early success. Even our first burn looked a lot like this. Couldn’t have done it without y’all, for real. The adventure continues.
May I ask here, at risk of hijacking the thread, is it normal for the edge of a firebrick to glow red? This wasn’t a widespread issue inside the box - just one focal area/corner of one brick. As a neophyte burner, I do not want to over fire my new heat-providing friend. We’re looking into having a thermometer installed before the surround gets put on the insert. I’d take suggestions on that, too. If y’all want to direct me to a separate thread, I’m game.
Gosh I hate that UTube shorts can’t be shown. https://youtube.com/shorts/U293YGvP83c?si=6NEth4ZA3J-nUeju
I hate the whole “short” part of YouTube. Wish they offered an option for vids not to be one. Let's see if this hack works, I think I figured it out:
