These beliefs will pass too! Less than 10 years ago, I wouldn't have considered a hydraulic splitter-no way! Been using a maul for decades. Still do, just not for the entire seasons supply. More of an as needed scenario. As you get older and your neck and lower back deteriorate/fail; as you lose your flexibility; as your BP increases; all good reasons to find ways to work smarter, not harder. Myself, I don't have one...but they sure are starting to look good!
I'm 42, and already have back and neck issues. I'm a salesman, so I spend all my days sitting in my home office, driving to customers, or taking them out to eat. An hour out swinging the maul at the end of the day is worth the pain.
Ha! I've been through all of that too...tell me the same thing in 25 more years. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy processing wood. We all know the benefits. Your body will let you know when you have to make adjustments/compromises.... There is a reason that work saving tools (pickeroons, hooks, log splitters, etc) are out there waiting to be bought!
I did buy a pair of logging tongs to lift rounds up into the trailer this year and glad I did. At 62 now and after back surgery in 96 I work smarter not harder. Also the rounds slide from the trailer to the splitter with out much lifting. And why pile the splits up to have to pick up again? Why not go from splitter to stack or truck or trailer? And for those hand splitters out there I would think I could move two or three of those splits at a time as others have said.
I've been shopping for a hookaroon online since seeing that. I know I want a 36". So far, I like the Logrite. I might visit a few shops tomorrow and see what they have.
I like my wood handling tools Pulp hook for heaver stuff Hookaroon 36" for unloading the trailer Cant hook for rolling logs Dragging polls around ,log tongs This is what I use for picking up splits 17" hookaroon, it works very well for me.
You left out one of the best backsavers FEL! Been at this wood burning thing for 42 years went from old heavy chainsaws axes splitting mauls you name it. Much prefer the lighter weight saws, hydraulics and all else that makes it easier
I bought one last year. When I first started burning I loved processing by hand. If I tried splitting by hand now my elbow would blow up and bother me all winter. I have every tool to make the job less stressful on my old bones now, splitter, hookaroon you name it.
There MIL might be in the bed of the truck, under the rug. I think he's going to use the firewood to get rid of the MIL's body.
Absolutely. I'm 42, and have used hydraulic log splitters for about half of those years. Growing up, before the log splitter, it was us three boys and Dad using an axe/ maul. I always follow the mantra to work smarter, not harder. A pickeroon is a good thing. Save yourself from bending over.
Using the hookaroon for getting rounds to the splitter is great. Dont know why i didnt get one sooner.
Same here, however, if I was ever in some sort of industrial accident where I lost both my hands I'd be looking for prosthetic hooks like that for my wrist stumps.
Enter the Pike pole into the conversation. Personally I am in the bending over stage of wood hoarding. I do see where the right tool could save your back, but I don't see any of these tools making the process quicker.
The pole is okay but it appeared he went out of his way to make the pickeroon look bad. That's the trouble with so many videos; they've watched too much tv so try to swing the viewers in any way possible rather than just showing normal work habits.
