Dave, sounds like you are really getting the 30 dialed in. The addition of the blower will make all the difference next year. This year we added it and the evenness of the heat in other parts of the house proved how well it works. Glad to hear the burns are much cleaner too. I think you did very well on this purchase, and should enjoy it for years to come. ;)

Getting the basics down was easy with dry wood.
I let those 2 pieces of Maple burn down pretty quick, and just loaded 5 white Pine at 9:30. That might be all I need until mid-afternoon, since the forecast is for 38°.
I was amazed that when I reduced air to less than half on the Pine, I went outside and saw nothing but heat waves. I did that within 5 minutes of loading, I'd guess.
Old stove would have been putting a pretty blue smoke into the air.
During the off-season, I'm going to take a peak under the stove to see if there's access to the primary rod under the ash pan. The rod sticks just a little at the end of it's travel in the closed position, and makes small adjustments a bit tricky.
The next flue cleaning will be the "proof in the pudding".
I may also take out the 1' section of Class A I put in, just to make cleaning a little easier next year. That will leave me with about 18'......still 3' over minimum.

    Nope, not yet.
Haven't done a cold start since getting it.
Last night's fire was e/w on the bottom, then 2 more layers alternating direction. No room on the top, and it caught fire before I got done loading.
It didn't want to get going well with the front piece blocking air flow.
I must be doing it wrong.

Alternating layers will probably make it burn faster\hotter..

Dig a little trench n/s in the coal bed and set the front e/w piece across the trench, that'll let the dog house air up under the front split.

The doghouse burns it's own hole in a few minutes. That's with the doghouse partially blocked.
    I almost took a picture.

papadave, since you linked me to this thread, I had to read it all (there goes 2 hours!) I'm sure this info is posted elsewhere, but how are you getting along with the 30 now as compared to March/April 2014? Did you ever try the convection deck idea?

Really liking the stove this year. I plan to adjust split sizes a little. Yep, I made a very crude deck that works great at spreading the heat. It actually allows me to load the stove less often, as it pulls heat from the stove and moves it into the house better than just using the blower with the rear heat shield.
I think I saw Dex' deck first, then Highbeam made one and posted about it.
Mine is just some thin, flimsy aluminum flashing. I may have put up a pic about it somewhere. I'm still trying to find a source locally for sheet metal, but I may have found a young man who will make a deck for me (my mechanic's son).

Sorry.. Haven't been on much. When I have, I can only catch up on emails (threads I've been involved in).

I've been working and training a lot at work lately.

If it's not supposed to come with a convection deck? It loses it UL listing (making it a modified appliance) and may or may not be covered under your homeowners insurance. Even if it wasn't the cause of fire (highly likely not to be!) But still the same. Any modification and it loses that listing.

I love mine and think they should be made with one from the factory.

Pretty long thread, don't have all day so I'll just ask.
Talking to a member on another forum he has an air leak on his NC30 where the semi circle is in this picture. It appears that this is a factory issue on his at least. Talking to the tech at Englander he said sorry about your luck since you are not the original owner, seems to me there would be some sort of help on a low hr unit having a problem like this.
    Any thought's folks?
    Thanks,
    Brett

I think the r/h side where the cutout is for the "latch". The door gasket covers that spot, just to the outside of the "semi-circle", so shouldn't be a leak if the gasket is good.

That was my exact thought as I read that. New gasket needed or close door handle just a touch harder. Can't leak naturally because the gasket is there.

My gasket needs replaced soon. I have to close the latch/handle pretty hard now to get a good seal.

Or? Unit has been overfired and warped heavily there because the door isn't latched proper (or back to bad gasket).

Tell him to do the dollar bill test around the entire stove door. Slip a dollar bill between steel frame and the gasket. Then close the door so the bill is pinched between the two. If you can slide the bill out easily? Gasket needs replaced if it's on non handle side. If it slips out easy on the door handle side? Tighten door handle and try to pull again.

Thanks for the responses everyone :).
You guys are on the spot he's having a problem with.
The problem is that you don't have to do a dollar bill check as you can see right in through that little cutout/moon shape hole(might describe it better, I'd normally just take a picture lol).
Imagine the door moved left about 3/8-1/2" to far o_O.

Surprised Englander couldn't help with this issue from an advice standpoint..
