Good morning hoarders! So I ran across this during my morning coffee. I've been in the market for a hookaroon and I've been debating on what style to go with. The Stihl/Logright steel style or the axe handle Council Tool style. Anyways I ran across this guy using a technique I've never seen before. Anyone use it? The technique I'm taking about starts at 1:20.
Well, not so far. I ain't so old or lazy to use that method.....yet. At 64 years old I still gather 4 or so splits at a time in my arms and toss 'en my truck. Shoot, I just gave up splitting by hand this summer! However, those and log tongs are waiting in the wings for me.
Yep I am with Ralphie Boy. Only 67 and I still have a few bend overs left in me. A lot of those splits look small and light.
He's taking the exercise out of the process! I can see that it could help you if you had a bad back, that's for sure. I thought they looked really light as well, Mag Craft .
Any medical statistics on self-inflicted ankle and eye injuries ? Looks like a scary weapon that should be illegal to me.
I wonder how the wife feels about him loading splits into his truck bed...on top of her embroidered 5x8' floor rug-
I agree with Ralphie and Mag, "BUT" a wise man said work smarter, not harder. With my back it looks like a good idea, but I'm stubborn and will just bend over and throw them in the truck! And, they do look awful tiny and light unless he's strong as an ox, he moves them real easy.
Thought the exact same thing. If one of those ends were to bury itself into ones ankle, that’s not an just accident, that’s an incapacitation...
Not for me yet, my problem would be I'd forget where the heck I left the hookaroons. Then I'd spend more time looking for damm things than it would take too load the truck two or three times.
I might have to try that. I have a history of back problems and all the bending over is the worst part of getting firewood.
I’ve got a short pulp hook as well as the longer hookaroon. I use the pulp hook all the time and wish I had bought it sooner! I use it mainly handling rounds though. It saves trying to use your fingers to get a grip on rounds big and small to load the splitter. The hookaroon I use only when emptying the truck or moving longer logs around I find it to be too long ( mind you I’m 6’3” ish with boots on) and cumbersome for splits and such. As far as splits I just load up an arm full and toss or stack to where ever I’m going.
Yea i never understood the “dont use your back”philosophy. Then you will have a weak back and always have problems. As long as you know your limits. Lift away
I hear ya, however the more elders I see that can barely stand straight it makes me think about it. I know a guy that has a small commercial sawmill by my house. We were talking about wood one night having a couple beers. Everything was fine while he was sitting down. When he left he shook my hand and asked his daughter to help him up. He wasn't drunk just basically half back crippled. If you dont have back problems I consider you blessed.
I like 'em! My back isn't great, but I'm not crippled either. Those look like saving a lot of wear and tear on the old back.
Taking the exercise out is the biggest reason that I won' buy a pickeroon, or put a tire around multiple rounds when splitting....or buying a splitter lol. Does it slow me down? I' sure it does, but I enjoy it, and it's good for my fat azz to feel it the next day too.
