Will be installing my new stove this summer. I've done some searching on optimal size of splits for the stove. Didn't see any too specific or definitive. Looks like there is a small vs larger debate. Thought this was interesting: What do like for your King? Length? Width? Thanks, ksks
18" splits of various thicknesses allow you to pack an absolutely ridiculous amount of wood into the King's firebox in the north-south orientation.
I pretty much completely stuffed the firebox of my king before with seven splits. They were square/rectangular and fit just perfect, and 100+ pounds of red oak. They burned forever. I would split everything big, and split them down smaller as needed to pack it full. The key is to be a few years ahead to be sure you have really dry wood. And I found I got more heat with smaller splits of wood like white ash. The monster oak splits were great for long burns with moderate heat output, but smaller splits of ‘inferior’ wood would make more heat for a shorter period of time. I think this is a blaze king anomaly, as the big oak splits in my non-cat PE make the most heat for the longest period of time.
I'm new to the BK's but I am finding this to be true as well. It really shows in my stack temps during cruise as well, smaller hotter, bigger colder.
